Which headphones are you using?

Hey everyone, I'm currently in the market to purchase some new headphones. I had an old pair of Bose QuietComfort 2's about 10 years ago and I loved the sound the produced and the active noise cancelling that they provided. It was amazing to go on a plane, put the headphones on, and not hear a thing.

I use studio monitor headphones at work (I do video production) and have a pair of Sony MDR-7506's. While I like them, I feel like they just don't carry enough bass for my liking. I like a good range, but enjoy having lots of low end frequency power.

Right now I'm looking at either the Audio Technica ATH-M50x's or the Bose QuietComfort 25, but wanted to see if anyone else here could chime in with other headphones they enjoy. The big pro for the ATH-M50x's are that they have a detachable cable, but the con is that I'm not 100% sure they will have the power I want on the low end. For the Bose the pro is that I am almost 100% sure I will love the sound, but the con is that they don't have the detachable cable. If the cable on the Bose gets caught anywhere and rips, I'm basically screwed unless I want to attempt the fix myself or have Bose fix them.

As for price I'd like to keep it under $300 if possible. The more noise cancelling, the better!

I have a pair of Grado SR60s. Served me well for almost a decade now. Great audio quality, hand made in the USA, and they're only like $80. I have heard the SR80s are worth the extra money but I haven't tested them myself.

That's if you don't mind the over-the-ear style.

I really can't speak for some of the other cans mentioned above, but I'm certainly an audiophile with a limited budget.

I've been so satisfied with my Beyer Dynamic DT770 pro's that I haven't ever considered using something else.

Maybe when I'm richer I'll risk my money on something better, but until then, I'm sold on this model. They're comfy, sound great, etc.

One thing you'll notice is that people with the higher end headphones will say things like "ive had this set for a long time". It's because they last much longer, and often sound better with age.

I used AKG K553 Pro's or Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros at work, and Beyerdynamic 770 Pros home.

I'm assuming you're using an amp with those? If so, which amp?

HD-280's. Love dat kevlar cord.

I currently have HD212 pros.. I've had them for 10 years or so and things are starting to rattle and fall apart. They've been good for $60 headphones but it's time to move on. The thing I really liked about these headphones was the removable cable. I probably bought 3 replacement cables because they would get destroyed after a while. That's why I'm kind of cautious about purchasing a set that doesn't have a removable cable.

HDs 540 Reference. Great cans. Got them for about a year now based on head-fi reviews. They're every bit as good as I they say.

also bose is overpriced junk

I understand the overpriced argument, but I do like the sound quality. I do also enjoy the noise cancelling so that if I'm going to use them in a public place I don't have to listen to any of the surrounding noise.

DT770s, 80ohm. Powered by the Compass combo DAC/Amp. I think this thing was a bit of an overhyped fad, but it does the job pretty well and is very convenient for my exclusively PC use.

Almost upgraded to HD650s a while back, then considered the Hifiman HE500s, then thought maybe I should just grab some Koss ESP-950 electrostats on sale, then didn't get anything.

Grado SR325s at home with an Asus Xonar STX Essence sound card.

I have a pair of AKG K553 at work where I can't really use open-backed headphones. They are also low impedance so I just use a $15 Chinese DAC.
