I need a headset to listen to my mp3's and PC gaming. I'm middle class but I use the headset very often so I'm willing to pay the price if necessary. My current sound processing unit on my Gigabyte MB is Realtek ALC888 8 Channel Audio Codec.
Primary Candidates
Sennheiser PC 31: Cheap and good. No volume control and no microphone mute
Logitech G930: 7.1 and wireless. Apparently the G930 has many problems and i'm not sure if they are fixed yet (desynchs every 10minutes, constant buzzing sound, tin can sound while in 7.1 mode, incompatible with certain software etc.).
Sennheiser PC 166: Same price as G930, but better audio quality. Not wireless and w/o 7.1.
Secondary Candidates
Planctronics GameComPro1: Planctronics has a bad reputation, but this one seems solid
Corsair HS1
Sennheiser PC 151
SteelSeries Siberia V2 & SteelSeries 7H are also solid, but are probably dominated by Sennheiser PC 166 (while nesting in the same price region).
Sennheiser PC 360 & Bezerdynamic MMX 300 The best - abut it could very well be that my onboard sound chip is the bottleneck here - and the price is very high
