Arctic Cooling MX-1 works well for me. Used to use Arctic Silver 5 until I got some of this stuff...

There are quite a few good ones out there now. AS5 and Ceramique are still very popular. The new Shin Etsu goops that can be bought under the CoolerMaster brand here (PTK series 002/003) are also excellent but pricey as CM also gets a cut - much easier to use than the old stuff (PTK-001) that had the consistency of a sort of dry modeling clay...

Is the Zalman any good? My VF700 came with it, I used it on that, but I want to know if replacing the stock NB paste with Zalman is worth it instead of buying AS5.

I doubt that Zalman would use anything that was real crap. Not hard to clean it off and try something else if you find it doesn't suit you.

Arctic Cooling MX-1 is at least as good as AS5. Put some on a Pentium 4 3.0GHz Northwood and now it idles @ 32-33C with a Freezer 4. Gave some MX-1 to RallyMaster and his Proc idles at the same temp as burned-in AS5, except the MX1 ISN'T burned in.

There was MX-1 pre-applied on my Alpine 64, it looked like they put a thick layer of it too, maybe that's how it's meant to be used? I like is so far, but never really compared it to anthing. It said that XM-1 works better with unsanded bases, or else that was just their marketing campaign,

Sorry for the link to another forum...I'm not sure if that's allowed here. But hopefully we can all get along

(scroll down for a second set of results)

Link proves nothing!!

Most thermal pastes are not junk thats are shipped with whatever needs them as in PCU heatsink etc....

With that said AS5 and other AS products are way over rated!!!

If you ordered a Zalman heatsink go ahead and use the thermal paste that is shipped with it!!
The Zalman thermal paste is a quality thermal paste!!!

As I said in previous posts-- the Artic Silver products are over rated!!

Of course if your risk tolerance is high, you could try some of the experimental substances as were attempted at Dan's Data some time ago - among them: toothpaste, water, vegemite... They all worked well enough...for a while.

It's a little pricey but the performance is quite definately there. I used it under my jing ting chipset cooler and have since removed the heatsinks on my video card and cpu to replace the AS5 on them with THIS

uhhh... and u forget to note that if u ever decide to use some kind of alunium heatsink, or if it gets in contact with Aluminum in anyway, it will start to eat it like acid!

because I have always stated that the AS products were over rated albeit good products!!

Most manufacturers who ship things like heatsinks and CPU`s don`t scrimp on the thermal paste they ship. Almost all thermal paste that gets shipped with quality components is also quality!

Alot of times there is no difference from the shipped thermal pastes and using AS5 or one of there other products!!

For once, I agree with JEDIYoda. AC's MX-1 does indeed perform well. It performs two degrees better than AS5 at load on my CPU. That's pretty good I must say.

Didn't forget, it's on the site, if you click the link to see what I'm talking about it's made very clear right on that page. How many people would be willing to spend $14 for .15ml of thermal paste for an aluminium heatsink.
