So im planning on building a home server, so i can have a dedicated box for my MC server, files, and a home FTP server. Im going to use an AMD sempron (athlon 2 X2 hopefully) and 4gb RAM. Windows 2008 server edition, but i dont know what software to use as an FTP server. Im using appache right now for my current one but it looks way too plain, im looking for somthing that looks better. Any suggestions?

Apache is an HTTP server, not FTP and Windows comes with IIS which does HTTP and FTP if you want. There are 3rd party ones that do other and more things better and worse, but for basic FTP functionality IIS is fine.

Does it have a better layout than appache? Because appache wont let me download directories, the files are just ugly links, and the background is white. How do i use/setup IIS.

For a home server, why would you need Server 2008? Why not just use the $50 WHS? It's got IIS built in too.

That's because it's an HTTP server, i.e. a web site server. It's not made for file transfers and definitely not for large batch file operations. If you installed a real FTP server you could use a decent FTP app (i.e. not IE) and it would work how you expect.

Better layout? If you already have Win 2008, just use file/drive sharing and you can access through network.

I want to be able to access files anywhere, including school.

Thanks guys, once i get the machine built ill check out IIS. What does that even stand for?

Can you tell me what a "real" FTP server is. because im not sure. What is IIS.

I already have server 2008, i havent installed it yet because im waiting on my CPU + RAM to be delivered, so im not sure what to expect once its installed.

IIS is a real FTP and HTTP server, Apache only does HTTP. Other 3rd party ones like Serv-U just do FTP.

IIS is the built-in HTTP/FTP server in Windows Server. However, if it is too complicated to setup, a third party FTP server software like FileZilla Server or Serv-U would be easier to setup.

If you're interested in streaming over LAN or web via HTTP, you might want to check out Subsonic. It is fairly simple to setup and supports streaming most media file types.

What about FreeNAS and Openfiler? It's awesome and cost you $0.00
Here is the 40TB server that I built for my client.
Running over 2yrs, use all WD green drives
Data protected (RAID50)
Green - only consume 180W
FTP, HTTP, RSYNC, NFS, ATP, SMB, iTUNE Server, Bittorrent...
Immune to ad-ware and virus

You can use cheap MB about $70 Intel board BOXD525MW

For reference you can see my 40TB Media Server

How much would a similar setup with maybe 10-15TB run?
