Hello All, I was wondering if there is a huge difference in between these CPU's? besides being LGA1150 and LGA 1151?
Intel Core i3-4170 3M

Intel Core i3-6100 3M

Thanks Guys

The 6100 supports DDR4 memory, and has far better graphics, including DX12 support. 6100 uses slightly less power as well.

Plus, if you get certain Z170 boards, they can overclock the i3-6100. You can't do that with the 4170.

i3 6100 with DDR4, it can get pretty close to an i5 4460 in performance. It feels identical to my i5 3550 when using it.

Still, the i3 4170 is a sick CPU (I had the i3 4160).

I think, that if Intel is getting militant about overclocking, and forcing mobo makers to remove non-K Skylake OC, then they shouldn't ignore the market for an unlocked i3. It's about time.

Nothing points to BLCK OC removal.

Rumors swirling that Intel might be walking back from allowing BLCK Overclocking

http://www.kitguru.net/components/c...may-block-overclocking-on-non-k-skylake-cpus/

Some random Chinese site is the source, so plenty of salt grains are in order of course.

In my opinion, the way this has been implemented is very un-intel. Hands off unofficial support via 'beta' bios from mobo manufacturers, that disable lots of cpu features.

I can't imagine Intel likes the idea of lots of people running skylake parts with all the speedstep and thermal management bits turned off, with voltages cranked 24/7.

Will be interesting to see if they can rein it in, now that the OC geni is out of the bag, so to speak.

Random rumours made for clicks?

Kaby Lake will have improved BLCK OC.

It may be that SL BCLK overclocking is not actually ready for prime time, so Intel may not want it turned on for SL chips.

Whereas with KL, it may be fully ready to go.

I tend to avoid BCLK OC'ing since it OC's the entire system, anything above 102 can put a bit of strain on the HDD and USB and bridges.

I have the i3-6100 and it has been a great choice for me. Very fast and runs cool. I don't OC. Paired with an ASUS H170 board. Lovely system.

Neither. Get an i5 6500 non K or drop to a G4400. i3s are just the odd choice out. Unless its a dirt cheap pre-built.

The important thing to take away from this, is that the i3 is, essentially, a massively-overpriced dual-core, at near quad-core prices. If your needs aren't satistisfied with a dual-core (G4400), then best go for a true quad-core (i5-6500). I say this as an i3-6100 owner, not overclocked.

6400 also isn't clocked very high - unless you overclock.

Both are locked, the 6500 is substantially faster at stock. A 2.7GHz base quad is just meh. The 6400 turbos to 3.3GHz. The 6500 starts at 3.2GHz for what, $20 more?

Yeah, the 6400 makes no sense at all with the 6500 being so close in price.
