I miss Anand.

He's an all around stellar human being. I still talk with him by phone from time to time. I was stunned when he got me on the phone with Derrick Wilson and asked me to be the new Forum Director. My immediate response was, "Really? Why would you chose me?" I truly didn't think I would be anyone's first choice for the job, as I was kind of a loose cannon as a poster. There was a bit of an awkward silence and then he gave me his reasons. Suffice it to say, it didn't take much to convince me.

It was sort of the same way, way back in the day when Russ asked me to join the Dark Side and become a mod. I honestly didn't know AT had mods! The Dark Side was a small and very tight knit group back then, and I guess it was considered a high honor to be asked to join. My first response was, "I dunno, what do I have to do?" Russ immediately let me know that was not the correct response. He let me join anyway.

Yes Alky provided soooo much entertainment. Since they banned a lot of those folks I started visiting less and less. Yeah banning those 5 was a mistake.

I never understood why people who run forums do this, I have seen forums wither away to nothing over the years because of a heavy ban hammer.

No question about it ... this place is a shadow of what it once was. Downward spiral started with the infamous "Change of culture" IMO.

It seems to happen to most forums. If i sarted a forum it would be lightly moderated, unless what you post is illegal (ie child porn etc..) I am not banning you. If you cant handle ribbing or a slur etc.. then go somewhere else. What happens is people want to turn forums into this perfect place of well behaved people like in the movie Demolition man. Admins think that thats what people want, but in reality its not and over time the vibe/culture starts to die, activity shrinks.

I rarely post outside of the tech forums anymore. P&N is a cesspool full of morons and OT just seems dead now.

EDIT: Whatever happened to BoberFett? He was always good for laughs.

Morons? They abound, but there are many many very astute, canny and well informed posters there. I'm often uber impressed. I've been hanging out there a lot. I get the lion's share of my responses there, many seem to like me, but I don't claim to not be a moron! However, I have very strong feelings about political issues and a lot of curiosity. Also, I stopped getting a daily newspaper every morning. TV news is depressing and very spotty. P&N is much more in depth and they link stuff online constantly. Yeah, Moonbeam is very active there.
