Which Intel Chipset.....

i may be needing to build another rig for video editing and since intel is going down in price so much it will probably be one of them. what chipset can i put a 930-960 in and be conroe ready? been out of the intel loop for some time....

also, i want a intel chipset, nothing else.

thanks, i have a good idea of what to build as i have done dv editing in the past, just wasn't sure on the newer intel chipsets.

the rest of the system would be something like:
2GB DDR2 (appropriate speed)
2-3x250GB HDD
450-500W Good Brand PSU

i would probably sale my x800xtpe, get a x1800xl or faster in pci-e, get a cheap agp card for my current rig....

i already have a case, software (adobe premiere), os, dvd-rw, etc.

i was thinking about just putting in a opty165 in my rig but i would like to be able to use a machine and have the other render, plus i could just about build a whole new machine for the price of the opty165...so even with my opty @ 2.5GHz i figure if i can use both rigs to create video i will be pretty good.

d@mn, the cpu may be cheap after the price drop but the m/b is f*cking expensive.....anything under $120 with the 975? 955 won't work?

Not sure about that. The infamouc Conroe benchmarks alongside the FX-60 were done on an Intel D975 XBX (Bad Axe) board. Intel could have very wll modifie3d the board though.

well 965p should be out in 2-3 weeks. just wait for that, those boards probably will start at around $110.

Exactly. One is MUCH better off getting a nice <$100 945P motherboard now, then a $100 to $125 board for Conroe when it arrives, rather than spending $250 now on a 975 board that may or may not work with Conroe.

Prices are already dropping fairly well on the pentium D 900's...

Pentium D 930 for $185 shipped

Pentium D 940 for $235 shipped

The 975x chipset has the capability to support Conroe. Revisions of motherboards are important, as it also needs the correct voltage regulator components. Some boards with this chipset will not support it without a BIOS flash.

Currently we have been using the Intel D975xbxlkr Revision 3.04. It correctly supports Conroe (core 2 duo) without a BIOS flash.

Also coming are 965 chipset motherboards. They will all support Conroe. They should be available late in July.
