which Intel CPU to overclock?

So, I'm buying parts for my Conroe-ready rig rather soon. Which CPU should I get to overclock until I pick up a Conroe?
thread about the whole rig: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1885476&enterthread=y

Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
RAM: OCZ Platinum XTC DDR2-800 2GB(2x1GB) CL4
Heatsink: Zalman CNPS9500 w/ AS5

I was thinking of just getting the famous/infamous 805 and pushing it as far as it will go. But, if I would get better results with the 820 (200MHz FSB and 10x multiplier) or 930 (65nm), do tell.

Thanks in advance!

I would go 65nm and 930 and avoid the heaters!!! Those are the type of chips you buy for winter...

can you get a core duo or yonah to work on the mobo??? They offer far better performance and are rather close or better clock for clock against AMD chips....Those others chips need to hit 4ghz to equal a 2.5ghz X2....4ghz will be a stretch on all of them short of water cooling though 2.5ghz on an X2 is a cake walk a retard could handle...

Hmm...let me rephrase the question:
90nm 805 or 65nm 930? I'm leaning towards the 805, because it's cheaper and it has that reputation. It's the "let's see how high we can take her" mentality. Remember, this CPU only has to last me a few months, so cheaper is better.

None of the above. If you're absolutely stuck with current Intel processors, go with the 930. Otherwise, wait for Conroe.

Do not, I repeat do not get the 805 or 820.

I can tell you this..

I bought a D805 running 2.66..

Now it runs 3400 at 34 degrees..

Ratio 1:1..

Need more info, let me know..

Lol.. this is first attempt only..

I can get it at 3600 easily i think..

Have the zalman 9550 cooler on..

Temps are excellent and not even changed voltage yet..

Be careful with the 805. It will start TM1 throttling on you if the temps get too high. I can easily get mine up to 3.7ghz stable w/ an arctic freezer 7 pro, but anything past 3.46ghz and I run into heavy TM1 throttling. Basically, it's useless after 3.46ghz, which isn't the best performer. So if you're *gasp* going to go w/ an 805, then you might as well get a nice cooler on it, effectively spending more money. I'd wait for conroe if I were you, which is what I should have done.

if u are into OCing the 805 is ur best buddie. If u want to enjoy the benefits of 4 ghz u should get a cheap water cooling system for the cpu like the corsair nautilus 500($130).
If ur temps get too high, throttling will take place and reduce performance.
So for the total price of cpu+liquid cooling=$230.Aint to shabby.Around the price of a pentium d 940.but u can use the nautilus for ur core 2 duo too.

Okay, 3.6 ghz isn't that great either *) Seriously, the 930 would do better (and Conroe better still). If you get a lucky 805 chip that doesn't leak much, you can get in the 4 ghz range without throttling. If you get a bad chip that thinks it's an old 820, you'll get high temps and need to feed it a lot of voltage to get high clock speeds which will mean lots of TM1 throttling as greatromances experienced.

And if anyone's considering cheap water, they may as well get the Tuniq Tower 120 instead.

To the OP, be patient, wait 'til the end of the month before you buy anything, okay?

@DrMrLordX:
This CPU only has to last me about 2 months. I think I'll stick with the 805. I'll overclock it as far as it will go on air cooling, just for ##### and giggles. I'll be picking up a C2D E6600 in six weeks time. The 805 is the cheapest. I only have $200 extra in my budget, and about $60 of that is going to upgrade my PSU from the Antec TruePower 2.0 to the Seasonic S12-600. I would like to save the remainder of that $200 to put towards that Core 2 Duo in six weeks. Heck, maybe I'll make the 805 into a keychain, or I'll save it as my backup CPU, because it's not worth it to eBay it.

Ppl are giving you there opinions...sounds like you have you mind made up, so shut up and go buy iut....We can care less what you waste your money on....

Bottom line your math is iffy and I am not sure how you are financing all of this off of 200 dollars...especially with talk of "key-chains".....

I think we have at least 4 weeks until we see conroes popping up in etailers and even then they will be tough to get before going out of stock and I believe significantlay higher then published prices we have seen.....
