which is better for a mouse, ps/2 or USB?
also, how can you increase the accuracy of the mouse in general?

in winXP, using intellipoint gave you an option that said "enable mouse pointer presision" or something along those lines.

when this was enabled then the mouse accuracy increased greatly, now in win2k, the option doesnt exist. why?
I`m still using intellipoing, same version as well (the latest).

i dun think i noticed any increased accuracy between using a ps2 and usb mouse. if anything, i think i prefer a ps2 mouse... becuz if i do not use the ps2 mouse port... i'll be wasting that port and at the same time... be hogging a usb port. so.... personally... i like ps2 mice

I also don't notice much of a difference but a usb mouse is plug and play which can be nice if you change mice for gaming, etc. while the computer is on.

Same here, I prefer PS2 mouse. I had a USB optical mouse from logitech, works fine but buttoms sucks...it broke for only a month of use.

I don't notice any difference as far as actual "performace" goes. I'm glad my mouse is actually usb w/a ps2 adapter though because that way I can easily use a front usb port for the mouse if needbe. That comes in handy when I need the extra cord length.

USB uses less CPU that PS2 does, so if your looking to minimze CPU usage, USB is the way to go

Hmm..you might want to use USB for other things...since u have a PS2 port why not use it?

USB comes in handy for scanners, webcams, cameras, printers..etc..

But one thing..I guess you can plug in the USB anytime u want..sometimes the PS2 plug gets loose and u gotta reboot..

But that's not really a big issue.

i`m not short on USB ports anyway, i have 5 of them. one for the mouse, one for my MP3 player & one for my digital camara.

i solved my problem anyway, it turns out that if you have the mouse sensitivity up to max, then windows will skip pixels to make it seem that the pointer is moving faster than what it is. so you just move the slider 5 points to the left (assuming you have it to max) and enable acceleration to max in the mouse control panel.

Its actually the other way around. PS/2 ports have less CPU usage than USB does. However the entire argument about this is stupid. The amount of CPU power ethier of the ports use isn't even measureable on 500mhz+ systems..........

Personally I have always liked PS/2. A PS/2 mouse will work with any x86 OS. A PS/2 mouse with its "refresh rate" set to 200hz seems smoother to me than a USB mouse. (well on my $12 logitech optical it does anyways.)

Plus whats the point of using up a USB port when you have a perfectly good mouse port free? When you don't use the port its IRQ (ps/2 uses IRQ 12) still doesn't get released unless your BIOS allows you to actually disable the port. Most modern motherboards I've seen seem to have excluded this option from the BIOS.

usb mice suck on my msi k7t266. i would use the ps/2 converter but i shoved my tower against the wall and broke the converter in the process.

Using USB on modern PC shouldn`t be noticable,I use both USB keyboard and mouse and never had any lag problems(apart from my 56k modem),btw increasing the PS2 mouse rate to 200hz I believe uses more processing power then the default PS2 speed.

Plus whats the point of using up a USB port when you have a perfectly good mouse port free?

So I can hot swap my mouse etc ,no big deal using USB infact I`ve never had any problems, remember some companies like Abit are starting to phase out PS2 on some of their boards.

you dont need intellipoint in Win2k. go to control panel->mouse->hardware->properties->advanced settings->set the sample rate higher. I've never noticed a difference when increasing the buffer.

you people are strange. USB is the way to go. Now, if you have a shitty USB support on your motherboard (chipset maybe? like mine), it may use up a bit of CPU, possibly the same amount as PS/2 or a little more. Also, USB IS faster by double or so (i think). Most people prolly wont be able to tell the difference though. Go with whichever you like. I prefer USB if you dont have many USB using appliances.

Hands up those who really believe that 2 or 3 years from now, new mobos will have PS2 connectors?
