Which is better? Seasonic M12II 850w or the 660w Platinum series?

As I've said before, keep an ear out for coil whine with the Platinum.

I have the 760 platinum and it is great. No coil whine or anything else. I think over time the extra for the Platinum with the better parts is well worth the money. You will never need another psu.

I've got a pair of Seasonic Plats in service, an 860W and a 660W, neither of which exhibit any coil whine.

The 860 is powering a 3930K with a Titan. The 660 is powering a 3570k and a GTX 780.

Personally, I'd put my money into as efficient a power supply as I could afford. If the Seasonic Plat model fits your use and budget, buy it. Excellent efficiency which creates less heat and less heat creation should lead to longer life of the power supply. But what's been so impressive about the Plats is the voltage regulation. JG tested the 660W and got 0% regulation on both minor rails to full output (meaning both the 3.3V and 5V rails never moved...stayed at initial values....damned impressive!) and 0.7% regulation on the 12V rail.

Now, that M12II is a nice power supply and one great group regulated unit. But today, spending my own money, I'll take an independent regulated, outstanding platinum rated power supply over any really, really good group regulated Bronze cert'd power supply. Why invest in a much older platform these days?

But what do the 3.3 and the 5v really power? It's the 12v that is important. IIRC the Gold 650w has better 12v regulation.. it's splitting hairs but it's measurable. Personally I don't like the new Seasonics, I own the 2009 650w. Now they have a cheap feel to them. I tried the Platinum. Cables felt cheap. The coil whine is a motherboard thing.. something to do with the USB volts..

Power supplies without defects will easily last over 3-4 years of intermittent use. Defect-free power supplies will typically fail when the component with the shortest expected lifespan fails, and the component will fail in a manner consistent with typically wear over time. This component is typically the electrolytic capacitor and if manufactured properly and all precautions with handling are followed, should fail due to dried electrolyte.

Sometimes manufacturing process can only be evaluated by looking at a group of units rather than just one. Many units might be issue-free yet a subset of the population has a consistently reproducible issue.

At a certain a point, a line conditioner does a far better job at improving reliability and/or performance.

My 760 Plat doesn't have a cheap feel to it. Not at all. I don't really care for the flat cables since it makes cable management more difficult, but Corsair's Plat's have the same cabling.

To the OP...JG gave the 660w Plat his thumbs up except when it comes to price, but right now it is $139 with a $20 rebate which makes it a great buy.

What about Corsair AX760? It's also the seasonic KM3 platform, but usually a bit cheaper than the Seasonic branded PSU's.

The only problem for me is that I am budget constrained. That is why I am weighing my options on getting the M12II 850w bronze or the 660w plats for seasonic.

If you want the 660W Platinum, go for it. You won't be disappointed in the least.

And it's plenty of power for your system. Anandtech, when testing the 650 Ti Boost, had a system-wide power draw of 289W using an overclocked 3960X setup with a 650 Ti Boost. Adding in a second for SLI wouldn't get you near the 660W's full output.
