I enjoy D&D based PC games(ie BG2)...however I could not imagine myself sitting with a bunch of people actually doing a pen and paper D&D thing.

I also enjoy some of the Star Trek TV shows..however I in no way consider myself a trekkie. Trekker. Whatever they call themselves now.

my vote goes to D&D though for the nerd factor.

haha well i've never played the games...I read the Dragonlance books which i don't consider nerdy at all...that's like saying anyone who isn't a kid and reads harry potter is homosexual (which is stupid)

Aren't D&D fans merely a subset of Star Trek fans? That should answer your question !

consider this: almost everyone who plays D&D watches Star Trek, but not everyone who watches Star Trek plays D&D. Star Trek might be loved by geeks everywhere, but it also is watched by plenty of "non-geeky" people. D&D on the other hand seems to be pretty much exclusive to the geek community.
btw, discussing the nerdiness factor of D&D and Star Trek can be considered very nerdy

*shrug* since they're both the direct entertainment source of all ultra-intelligent dieties I don't see that it matters...true geekiness and nerdom are tough to define. They're commonly associated with intelligence, hence D&D and Star Trek are about high IQ's.

If instead you are asking which pasttimes are the most worthless and should be laughed at and scorned, then I think sports, capitalism, and social pursuits should top the list.

I like both, but I think Star Trek is nerdier. Especially Star Trek books.

D&D.. Dragonlance, etc are all about creativity. Fantasy books certainly don't have to be nerdy.

On the other hand, just because they've added some women with big breasts to Star Trek series doesn't change that most of it is pretty shallow technobabble. There's not much real thought going on there, just gloss and technobabble. To me, that makes it nerdier (in a slightly derogatory sense). On the other hand, shows like Babylon5 actually have some real thinking and creativity going on, even if they're more niche.

So who's your favorite Dragonlance char? =P

Wayyy too many to decide. Kitiara is bitchin, and the name is cool. Of course Tas is fun, so is Fizban. Raistlin and Fistandantulus(sp?) kick butt...*shrug* I dunno, all of them?

my vote for DnD

(I know a lot of casual Star Trek fans, but I think DnD is either hc or not interested)

Knowing the difference between D&D and AD&D wins by a mile. But, I would say Star Trek is nerdier. AD&D you had to actually use your imagination, Star Trek you just sit and argue about whether or not there really is a Klingon language.

One of the things i miss about my childhood are those weekends when a group of us got together around a table to play D&D.

But i think there's a scale to it, with:

Reading Star Trek stuff as being the nerdiest thing.
Then Playing D&D would be one below it.
Then watching Star Trek.
And reading D&D stuff would be the least nerdiest.

D&D is definately nerdier... sometimes i'll see some people wearing cloaks w/swords and such around the RIT campus... kind of creepy.

There are soo many more star trek fans that cover all sorts of different lifestyles. It just seems to me that D&D is way nerdier....

D&D is about creativity so in principle it should be less nerdy. But in actuallity many more non nerds watch star trek then play D&D.

I think if you say D&D is nerdier you have never played it really..... or not understood it. Star Trek is pretty geeky... and its a bit lame... Its all about Star Wars and D$D you see these two things have an 'epic' could vs evil mythic drama to them. D$D games ussually involve concepts like, honor, loyalty, and heroism... things that most people plopped down to watch the sunday football game are far from begin akin too

If instead you are asking which pasttimes are the most worthless and should be laughed at and scorned, then I think sports, capitalism, and social pursuits should top the list.

I couldnt agree with this statement more... except im not sure what social pursuits mean... it seems like a helathy social life in a valuable thing.... However I quiver to think what my life would be like if it revolved around sunday football and fantasy baseball leagues....

Also, it doesnt really matter what the lay person thinks about nerdiness..... let the proliteriate enjoy their simple pleasures, remember that these people derision stems from a lack of understanding and jealousy of cognitive faculties.... as an intelligent person, try to be understanding...

Did I offend enough of you?

good, rant at me, I will enjoy the extent to which I control your anger with simple words...
