AMD cause their cheaper and the performance is virtually the same.

if they cost exactly the same, i'd say intel. then again they dont cost the same

Plus you can overclock AMD's chips better by multiplier (connecting L2 bridges, or GFD) - Intel's your limited to fsb increases, which probably wont allow you to overclock as far.

You are virtually NOT fsb limited at all if you have a P3 700 the runs 100 fsb and you overclock it on a 133 fsb supportable motherboard. That is where you are basically totally processor limited since most if not all systems with good ram and motherboard will do around a 150 mhz bus on a 1/4 multiplier.

AMD may be the best cpu...

But as far as motherboard support goes, Intel has the best. Also take a look at AMD mobo vs intel mobo prices...

It really depends on your definition of "best"

I think (not a fact!) for a total solution - motherboard chipsets and CPU's, Intel wins on the "Quality" and "Stability" fronts.

AMD are undoubtably the "best" for "value" right now, especially with the Duron CPU, that may change, as could the Intel "Quality" and "Stability".

If I had the choice assuming equal prices and Mhz I'd go for Intel.

If I was buying new right now, AMD would get my $$$ as they offer the "best" product for my needs, which is mainly gaming and internet use - and at a very reasonable cost.

There are other issues with AMD solutions such as temperamental power supplies, RAM, bad motherboards, etc etc. This also happens with Intel solutions, but seemingly not as frequently.

Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch..

well, AMD CPU's are faster on the $$$.

in other words, $200 will get you a much faster CPU from AMD than Intel

good Intel mobo's are around $115 to $130

good AMD mobo's run from about $120 to $150

AMD has the advantage of much higher memory throughput and grossly improved FPU performance

Intel has the advantage of greater support for SSE than AMD has for 3dNow

as far as FSB overclocking is concerned, the mobo and the CPU can typically take it, but timing-sensitive devices, like IDE, SCSI, NIC and the like don't necessary like that

personally, I'd love to be able to adjust the clock multiplier on my CPU

I could easily go 7.5 * 138 without the problems that I have @ 7 * 144 with burning CD's and crappy NIC connection on my DSL

Can you even get an iNTEL cpu for $200?

Seriously, both have their strong and their weakpoints, but overall they perform similar. Stability is hardly a problem anymore for either one of them, so the biggest difference would be the price. I wouldnt go as far as AMD is better than iNTEL or vice versa. Some people like BMW, some like Mercedes.

heng,

There's no real winner in this contest - they both work well, it just depends what side you want to go with. I built my first system with a Duron and haven't had any trouble. Build whatever you feel like and don't worry about micro-analyzing it too much. Face it - building your own isn't really about being cheaper, its just because its there.

as seems to be the trend I'm voting AMD based on Price/Performance value.

The Coppermine P3 is a top notch processor, but compare it at performance parity with the TBird K7 and the TBird typically has a price lead.

(note: performance parity is not necessarily equal Mhz..for example the P3 is usually a bit faster than an Athlon at Quake3, so if that's your main concern you may have to compare say a 900 TBird to an 850 P3 or something like that, and there are other benchmarks that a TBird clearly leads and you have to give the P3 a Mhz boost to achieve even performance)

The other side of the coin is Duron/Celeron, and this is a grey area. For a lot of applications an i810E + Celly is a good fit, but for a Value minded gaming machine there is just no contest. And with the SiS730 finally coming out AMD might take over this i810E market as well.

But overall I'll say AMD, though Intel is by no means a poor choice, it'll just cost you a bit more (well ok the P4 is horrid choice...but the P3 is good)

Both CPUs are good; it just depends on your fancy. I choose Intel because they current are the only game in town, which does SMP, and run cooler then AMD. It gets hot where I live and my T-Bird was running way to hot for me to be comfortable (55C-58C).

Has soon as AMD offers SMP I will look into it, but for now Intel is what I use.

Either one will make a great system.

amd and intel CPUs rock

If you have a good Motherboard for an intel CPU ... intel is better
If you have a good Motherboard for an AMD CPU ..... AMD is better

however ... AMD is as of right now ... the best bang for the buck ....

I personaly have one of each ... that way i can say i have one of each (that is my reason, really)

Apple is like cyrix, hopelessly lost and confused.

Now reguarding Motherboards ... 440BX is friggin awesome i agree ... but stuff like i810 and i820 are hopelessly ghey! 815 chipset is nice ... but its not perfect.

KT133 chipset is sweet ... it is not perfect ... but it certainly performs quite well (as well as its quite stable)

AMD mobo prices are still a bit steep (i spent around 175 for my kt7 raid a while ago) ... compared to $120 i spent on a bh6 a few years ago ...... but the prices are dropping ... I purchased a FIC Anthlon board for under 100 bucks for a PC i was building for my sister... i realize FIC is not the same as Abit or Asus ... but the board looked like it would serve its purpose well.

So ... i guess i would conclude this by stating my original answer ...

I love amd
and I love intel

intel has screwwed up quite a bit in the last few years ... but they are gonna learn from their mistakes (this is just a prediction) and they are gonna figure something out ... pentium 4 may not be too much of a hit ... but when those .13micron Coppermines come out ... people are gonna go nutz for em ... (well some people at least)

just my 2 bits ... maybe even 3 bits ... or 4 ...

AMD for countless reasons. Almost every Intel product I have owned has made my life miserable!

EX. It took me 2 YEARS to figure out my P133 system was unstable because my 2 Intel SIMMs were 80NS!!!

If money is no object then I think that intel is better. But if money does mean something to you then I think that AMD is better.

Not all of the motherboards are very expensive. You can get a great k7t pro2 motherboard for about $120.

i think most of us is thinking of the price per performance wise.

like sometimes why do you want to buy BMW instead of Mercedes??

because one is cheaper than the other one

i personally think that what i paid for, it must worth even a single penny of the money.

the situation now seems like AMD is leading on the price/performance side

i never doubt with the intel's stability and quality and i never think AMD has whole lot of incompatibility problems as some of the "end users" said.

being a consumer, we should know what you got is worth the quality that they have...

it is just my 2 sen
