Which defragger do you think is the best or which defragger are you using? I'm currently using Diskeeper but I'm tempted to switch to PerfectDisk since I'm Diskeeper insists that my HDD has 10GB of undefraggable space reserved for system use.

Please include pros and cons of the defragger if possible, and what makes it better/worse than the others. Thanks!

You can download and try PerfectDisk free for 30 days. I tried both Diskeeper 7 and P/D - now 6, and after direct usage comparison, went with P/D. It is faster, and the graphic metaphor is more logical. It really shows what is where on your HDD, particularly with regard to NTFS/MFT files. It has an excellent offline defragger that handles those files as well as other System files.

Speed Disk was excellent in Win9x, but the WinXP version of it is much more limited. It can't seem to touch the swapfile anymore - it could defragment that in Win9x.

Diskeeper 7 works beautifully on XP, especially useful if you have it on more than one machine, as it has a network management interface (why go to different rooms/floors of your house to defrag the drives if you can do it from the comfort of your chair? =) )

Diskeeper has treated me well for the last 4 years. I have actually purchased my copies, too.

I've been a fan of O&O for three or so years on both Windows 2000 and now several XP boxes. I use MS BootVis on my primary partition which is small and easily "cleaned down to size" ...the built-in defragger knows not to mess with the way BootVis arranges my "startup" data ...this is important if you use BootVis (the O&O doesn't respect it, neither do some of the others, Diskeeper Lite version does but, I don't know about the regular Diskeeper). I use O&O on a both a 110 GB and a 200 GB partition bi-monthly or so for exacting layout of files.

I sometimes use Sysinternals to defrag the Page File on boot and every once in a while the O&O. If you keep the primary partition (programs and OS only) the MFT doesn't explode. And, therefore, doesn't get fragmented.

I use Jetfrag, it's part of System Suite. Don't know how it compares, but I use to use Disksweeper and had problems with it. This one claims to do a kinds of advanced stuff beyond simply "defraggin" I use it because it seems fast *shrug*

Thanks for the response guys. Looks like Diskeeper is still the overwhelming favorite. I guess I'll stick with it on my main system while monitoring how PerfectDisk works on my HTPC.

as I type this there is an 22.45% vote for the Windows-Defrag utility.....I can't believe people actually use it

but its probably better then nut'n but a die-hard gamer MUST have a good defragger cause its all about fffffast frame rates

The things people won't believe ...it works and respects bootvis laid out files ...it all depends on what kinds of files you intend to re-arrange, whether or not you need something with more "ooomph" or not. On a primary partition with an OS and programs it serves quite well.

i try to make it short....

Under XP the only two good defraggers are either Diskeeper or PerfectDisk.

All other defraggers don't utilize the XP specific features (like prefetching, XP layout optimization etc.).
Only PerfectDisk and Diskeeper can read this files (eg. layout.ini in Windows/prefetch) and then put the files accordingly. (Eg. for a faster boot).

Dont even try to use stuff like Norton SpeedDisk (which works fine under 98) under XP.

I personally use PerfectDisk6.0 and i am very happy with it. Diskeeper is similiar, i dont think there are any big differences in the result, both are good defraggers.

not too surprising. the built-in mimimal XP defragger is a lite version of diskeeper..and the layout.ini is a XP specific feature. (Self optimizing filesystem...lol so to speak Would be weird if the defragger then would do something different and screw up what the XP layout optimizer put together - so it doesnt surprise it uses the layout.ini.

Is the defragmenter/optimizer that comes with Norton SystemWorks 2003 the same as Norton Speed Disk?
