I've used D-Link and SMC routers for my clients; nothing made them stand apart from other modern routers. They're probably the closest to true "plug and play" devices that you'll get these days. You just don't think about them.

Me and all of my friends are using Linksys routers, one of my friends bought a D-Link one(cheaper model) and its a total POS. Like 1/20th of the options that the Linksys has.

I ha d a Linksys that I loved and then it died one day, they only had a 1 year warrenty so I bought a Belkin router, it set up very easily and I haven't had any problems with it plus it has a lifetime warrenty.

How many ports do you need? Most of the D-Link/Linksys/Netgear routers I've seen are 4-5 port, which is why I ended up with an 8 port SMC Barricade router. Its actually 7 port, with 1 WAN port. Its a 100Mbps LAN switched combined with a broadband router, parrallel port print server and firewall, and supports triggered maps and DMZ(w/o the need of rebooting) if you have some apps that don't work properly. My only gripe is that the print server supports only parallel port rather than USB, but then again at least is HAS a print server unlike other routers I've seen...

Its also pretty cheap.I got mine for less than 200USD.

Oh, for HOME use...I use a D-Link DI-704. I find it is easier to open incoming trigger ports than the Linksys. But honestly, they're all pretty much the same, they all have roughly the same features and sam throughput, so just pick the one with your favourite colour...

NetGear had great reviews..so went with the RP-114. Cool feature is it's all metal construction...and it is small. But, honestly...they're all pretty similar unless you go with a "pro" router like a Cisco or Symmantec (nice!)

Zyxel Prestige 314 or its twin the Netgear RT314 (now discontinued though, I've seen it for $40-50 refurbished).

I've been using the wireless SMC Barricade for the last 1 1/2 years and I love it. Easy to set up, works great, has a print server.

I have a D-link 704 which I bought for $15 at Best Buy. It has all the features a home users would ever need. I've had it running for 6 months straight and no freeze ups or slow downs in surf speed.

BTW it was only $15 so it was a no brainer

Really they are all pretty much the same. Just go to best buy and look for whatever is on clearance or open box. I got my netgear R311 for $30

I do have one gripe, but i think its my ISP's fault. On my Adelphia cable modem, I sometimes lose DNS info, and I have to reboot my router.

Total cost: $25.00

i agree, i don't think there are any really big differences with routers, i mean just get a well known brand like linksys, netgear or belkin and you'll be fine. and btw, i have a linksys and its works great.
