Im looking into buying a new Soundcard. I've heard about: SoundBlaster Audigy2 Player, Hercules Game Theater XP 7.1, TerraTec SoundSystem DMX 6Fire 24/96, M-Audio Revolution 7.1 and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

But which one is the best?????

Mainly I will do digital video/audio editing (DVD), create mp3's playback through a THX dolby Altec Lansing surround soundsystem, listening to music and play the occasional game.

I don't know how it would be in editing, but I love my Game Theater XP for sound quality in music and gaming. If you don't need the extra connections, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is good.

I prefer any SoundBlaster w/ 5.1 - More sound card than most people need!

I hear the Audigy 2 is very good. You may want to make sure to get optical connections for the audio if you want it very clear.

Soundcards haven't been innovated like video cards of the past decade. You won't go wrong with just about any sound card these days.

I vote for the Revo 7.1. Its playback is superb and assuming you have a fast CPU gaming performance with it is decent (though it's no Audigy, but your main use is editing and music so Revo is where it's at).

I have heard of people complaining about "lag" on the game theater XP supposedly because of the distance between the external box and the PCI card in the computer. I havn't noticed anything like that, though. All those connections are pretty useful too.

The Audigy2 should be nice for sound editing or some recording stuff, but it's overpriced...

I have the Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 and absolutely love it paired with my Megaworks 510D's. I have built many computers with the Audigy 1 cards, and it is defanitely more superior. I have never had a problem with games as of yet, and DVD's sound great. Plus, the breakout box looks bad ass.

I agree FULLY with this fella'. If DVD and content creation are your #1 priorities, you'll see a HUGE difference in the M-Audio Revolution. AND it's got proper ASIO drivers being from a pro-audio soundcard company.
Creative Labs is good for games. THESE guys are tops at AUDIO! And the games'll be pretty darned good too.

Search for "M-Audio Revolution review" on the net and see for yourself.

I`d get the audigy2 as well. It has better game support as well. Im you get OEM, then it`s pretty cheap. You cant go wrong with a SoundBlaster.

Um... I'm guessing you guys have never run a pro-audio app in your lives.....
There's a world of difference.

I'll admit, if you're gaming, an Audigy2 is a grand ol' card, but the M-Audio Revolution and others are in a much higher class because they'll also do the pro-audio apps decently, something the SandBlasters could never do.
If it doesn't have working ASIO2 drivers, don't buy it.

I say "working" because Audigy2 and nForce both claim to have ASIO drivers but they don't work.

The chance are that he wont notice the difference between an Audigy and a M-Audio, only a very very few people can tell the difference between the various higher sampling rates.
Becides the Audigy2 is 24/96 thoughout, its the original Audigy that downsamples.
