Which laptop is better at the same price?

My school forces me to get a new laptop and I have these two as my options:

Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad T43

Pentium M 1.86 GHz
60 GB Hard Drive 7200 RPM
1 GB RAM
14.1" SXGA+ Color Screen
64MB ATI Mobility RADEON x300
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive (CD Burner)
10/100/1000 Ethernet
802.11a/b/g Wireless


Toshiba Tecra M4

Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz
60 GB Hard Drive
512 MB RAM
14.1" SXGA+ Color Screen
64 MB GeForce Go 6200 TE
CD/DVD Super Multi-drive (CD and DVD Burner)
10/100/1000 Ethernet
802.11a/b/g Wireless

I've never tried a tablet PC so I don't have any basis by which to judge whether they are any good. I've also been unable to find any meaningful comparison between the 6200 TE and the x300. My inclination is to go with the Thinkpad, I have used a T40 for the past 2 years and been very satisfied with it but I'd like to hear if anyone would choose the Toshiba. The cost of these notebooks is set by the school and equal.

Yep, unless you plan on running Linux, because (from what I've read) Ati drivers are not very good in linux.

I'm posting this on a T42, PM 1.7GHz, ati 9600, SVGA+ (1400x1050) and 768mb ram, it's good

Get the M4. I have the m200 from toshiba and its well worth the money. Since youre going to school you should buy the tablet cuz you can use it in the classes to take notes and do whatever you want. Everyday i use my tablet for about 4 hours at school and like 3 at home. If i had a regular laptop i would only be able to use it for around 3 hours at home, so just on the fact that i use my tablet so much more than a regular laptop makes it worth it.

I dont think i'd ever buy a regular laptop again.

The ibm is better in performance with the faster hdd(i think M4 has a 5400rpm) , more ram and video. But the M4 has a dvd burner. dvd burner is not worth that much. maybe if it is to you.

Tablet only has enhanced value if there is a tablet written app that you need to use/adopt... Buying a tablet and simply using it with the functionality of the Tablet OS itself is not the best investment.

I've had quite literally every T-series.... and now have a T43 which replaced my T42p... Both have the fingerprint reader - which itself is a great investment... adds security while also adding ease of use, and very secure password management.
