Okay, head over to bestbuy.com, and please tell me which laptop you would get in the $1000-1500 range. I was set on buying a thinkpad, but since my relative now works at best buy, it would be wise to go through this outlet.

If you asked me about a the difference between a 700m and a t43, i could tell you. However, i dont know which one is better and why when it comes to the ones i see at best buy.

Depends what you want to do... game or office work ect.

The two that stand out are the Gateway 7515 with the AMD 64 4000 and X600ATI for light games.

And for office work I have read a lot of good things about this semi tough book.

Intel ver
and
AMD (64bit) ver

I was looking at the MX7515 but got 30% off my Dell 9300.

Twinhead has a great video on their homepage.

Toshiba is very good. However, I would just get an IBM. Best Buy requires you to get service through GeekSquad, which is often very expensive. IBM is supposed to have marvellous tech support. However, you can't get a ThinkPad for 1200$ or less with much in the way of graphics card power.
You could get an iBook; that's what I would do. Nice laptops, and they sell them through Best Buy. AppleCare is pretty good, too.

EDIT:
Twinhead is an older manufacturer of laptops. They make some barebones for other companies if I recall, but they still sell a few laptops under their own name.

RE-EDIT: Best Buy has a few good deals on laptops locally (look for ads in the sunday paper), but in general, they're a pretty lousy place to go. Office Depot is much better; and many online sources (ABS) are better still.

I agree about BB and Toshiba but the Toshiba's at BB don't have good video till you get way over his price range. I know the Gateway goes on sale a lot for around $1200 and that is a lot of laptop for that price when your talking retail stores. But if he has cash there is no doubt that he would get 3 times the laptop online. Some places to look would be....

BB likes to keep PC's in service for 30+ days per repair and fight to not honor their lemon policy. I don't like them at all.
