If you liked LOTR in the theater and didnt' think it was too long, then you'll love the extended version that much more. I woulda loved LOTR if they were 5 hours long for that matter. although, i do admit some of the scenes were a bit incongruous. If you've never seen LOTR, get the extended versions. If you've seen LOTR in the theater ilke I did, get the extended anyway to watch again. The second time I saw LOTR were teh extended editions and I probably enjoyed it more that time.

Definitely the Extended versions. Extra scenes in the movies plus all the documentaries and such are great too.

No contest. Extended.

One complaint about extended Fellowship, though. The title came at a different spot than the original theatrical release. The theatre one has the title come up beautifully at the forest where Frodo was sitting at the tree. Why they changed that in the extended is beyond me.

Those who complain about the lenght of the movies are typically people with short attention spans.

I don't mind a long movie as long as it keeps me entertained the whole way through. If the extra content in the extended versions add to the storyline then I would welcome the extra 30-45 minutes, not dread it.

Some of the better movies I've seen over the past few years have been long ones; LOTR, Titanic, Shindler's List, to name a few.

There are the real versions, and then there are the crappy hacked-down versions they showed in theaters so the retarded general population could watch it.

The shorter versions. I've read the books, and I honestly don't think the extended versions are any truer to them. In fact, there are aspects of the extended versions that are different in the book. The executions of Wormtongue and Saruman, for example.

The extended edition version of the Hobbiton entrance is the original version. They made the theatrical version afterwards. Good choice too imho though I wonder if I would say they same if they were reversed.

didnt sarumon take over the shire, and had to be removed by the hobbits returning home from their trip?

i dont think that would have fit well in a production movie. neither could they have just let that end of the story lie without any explanation. the way they did it could have been done better, though.

Weired thing about it is that the chapter where they retake the Shire is my favorite in the entire trilogy.

oh yay, a purist.

It doesn't matter how "true" it is to anything except entertainment; and the extended versions are just more polished and enjoyable to most people I know who have either read the book or not.

It really just doesn't make too much sense to go with the theatrical versions when they're really just the compromise that was made to make them acceptable for theaters to actually show without increasing ticket prices (in some cases prices were increased, especially on debut) and without intermission. The extended editions are really the versions in their most complete form - whether or not they're more true to the book doesn't matter (without getting too absurd); they're more true to themselves and that's what matters for me.

As a big LOTR nut I love the extended Two Towers and RotK, but Fellowship was the slowest of the three and the extended edition became too long for me. The other two are no contest though, the extended are far FAR better than the theatrical. I will say though, if you are trying to get someone hooked, show them the theatrical. The extended gives a lot of extra information and fleshes things out, but you first have to get them hooked into it so they actually care about the characters. If they don't care the extra half an hour or more will just drive them away quicker.
