which metal saw?

I recently picked up a little job that requires some metal parts 1.25 dom, 1/4 plate and 3/8 plate.

i am going to make a few hundred bucks and use it to buy a saw for the job.

looking at the evolution rage 2 14 in saw ( carbide blade) $186 on amazon.
There is a fien version for about 400.
then there is the old school abrasive type saw for 100 bucks or so from the usual brands.

Are these "cold saws" really a lot better than an abrasive saw?

what do you use and/or recomend? I will use it mainly small projects. I will be building new pull up bars for our gym on this one.

the metal yard I use, pushes those evolution saws.
Fien is a reputable brand, I would think that is a good saw......


I'd opt for the evolution saw at less than half the price. realistically it probably comes down to which ever one has a better blade

do those carbide or diamond blades really give that much better of a cut? i use cheap $6 dewalt 14" abrasive wheels in a ridgid saw and they seem to work alright.

There's nothing wrong with an abrasive saw, just noisy and slow.

the abrasive disks are quite flexible creating a lot of inaccuracies. I have used them, but not the carbide type.

Looked at the harbor freight 4x6 band saw?
http://www.harborfreight.com/horizontal-vertical-metal-cutting-bandsaw-93762.html Had mine for many years. I like that I can use it vertical for odd cuts. Most of the industrial supply companies stock blades the right length.

band saw is an option too. I'll have to look at the grizzly also. damn... too many options. The saw takes up a lot less space too. other things coming up in the future are bumpers and sliders for a wagoneer and some metal parts for a stairway.

Don't bother with grizzly, you have to rebuild the machine to get it to cut straight.
