Well in my opinion, those are quite different monitors. The 753DF is a pretty good shadow mask while the AV-7TF is a good trinitron. I would think the Samsung is quite a bit cheaper.

I think a better comparison would be a AV-7TF vs. Samsung 700NF and those are both very good monitors though the 700NF has a little bit higher resolutions and refresh rates I believe.

If you are in fact looking for a shadow mask 17", check out the 755DF since it has a little bit higher refresh rates or even the 700IFT which even has better refresh rates and max. resolutions though it will be a little more.

The reason I choosing between those 2 is because I work at Best Buy part time and those are 2 of the higher end monitors that they carry. There is also 2 viewsonics: the A70 and the A75F. I like the A75f, but it is a little more than I want to spend. The A70 isn't flat screen, which is why I am picking between the KDS and the Samsung. I need to stick to 17" because I can't fit anything larger at the moment . So, if you had to choose between the KDS and the Samsung, which would it be and why? Thanks.

Well if I were you, I would go with the KDS. I've seen the AV-195TF and it looks pretty good so I'm sure the 17" looks the same except is smaller. The reason I would go with the KDS is because I prefer trinitron monitors to shadow mask. The AG damper wires don't bother me at all and I would rather have the brighter colors of a trinitron than the crisper text of a shadow mask. I don't use my computer for only text so I like those better colors of a trinitron in games and graphics. The refresh rates and max res is very similar between the two I believe (1280x1024@65hz for Samsung, 1280x1024@60hz for KDS maybe?). They both probably have a refresh rate of 85hz at 1024x768, where you'll be running it probably.

So in that particular comparison, I think the KDS has a slight edge, mostly because it would fit my needs more than the shadow mask Samsung.

So by your reply, a shadow mask would allow for crisper text on a monitor, while the trinitron tube would allow for crisper images/brighter colors? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each type of monitor? I would like to make an intelligent decision . If it would take a while to explain, then if you could point me to a good description online......

Thanks.

Well I don't know much else. Shadow mask are best for text usage (word processing, spreadsheets, etc..) since they have crisper text while a trinitron monitor has brighter, more vibrant colors so graphics and games it is bettter for. A trinitron allows more light through so that's why you have the brighter image. Also, a trinitron monitor has damper wires to support the tube. There is two I believe on 17" like a 19" trinitron. These things annoy some people so much they don't get trinitron monitors for that reason. I never had used a trinitron until I got my 900NF and sure I notice the wires but they do not bother me at all. They are only noticeable on bright colors like white and they show up as thin grey lines. I don't notice them anymore even on white because I find it to be just a faint grey line that could be part of the webpage for all I care. I couldn't really tell you any other disadvantages or advantages. I don't know of any websites telling more about shadow mask vs. trinitron. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can get in here?

I don't know how anyone can prefer shadow masks to trinitrons. The display of the latter is purer for text, like the printed page because less electrons are blocked. You get higher contrast. However it is said that colour purity because of this is compromised... nah.
Get a SONY!

I'm probably in the minority here.. but I have always felt that you get what you pay for in monitors. Samsung's a decent brand, KDS isn't all that great, but Viewsonic is fantastic. How much more is the VS? Otherwise it's a tough decision... Trinitron is great but crappy monitor parts suck. Of course, I could be a little biased against KDS

The discount is 5% over cost... Pretty good on home audio stuff, lousy on most computer stuff. I intend to get a Radeon to go with this new monitor. Does that help with any recommendations? Doubt it...

They sell the A75f for $300, pre-discount. I never looked into it. I only get like $30 off monitors...

I like Viewsonic but every time I read a monitor review the Viewsonics always come up short on technical aspects. Funny thing, everyone likes Samsung and Trinitron but refuse to believe that KDS can offer these items without attaching "cheap parts" at a much lower prices (KDS uses Samsung and Trinitron tubes). I own three KDS monitors and have had to RMA only one after two years for a minor problem. Like KDS or not..they do stand behind their products and will do so without question and will get you a replacement very quickly.
The AV-7TF would be my choice.

Decided yet? Personally I wouldn't go with the Viewsonic if you are considering it.

What are you uses for the monitor?

I think I am going to go with the KDS. Good price (plus trinitron). I do mostly internet, some games, and homework once in a while. I am going to get a Radeon to go with it.

As for best stuff to buy at BB w/ a discount, it's gotta be accessories (cables, ink, paper). The mark up on some of that stuff is well over 50% (You pay less than half of retail). Then it would have to be Car Audio. Ridiculous.

Thanks for all the suggestions/help. I actually learned something... heh
