Which Motherboard for my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400?

I bought a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3Ghz without buying a motherboard.

Any recommendations for a motherboard?

I've heard nothing but good things about the ASUS P5Q-E board. I don't own one myself yet, but will be ordering one soon to run a E8400 or E8500

I'd recommend the MSI P45 Neo-F for sure- very pleased with MSI atm :thumbsup: .

I know. My E8400+P5QE combo is running rock solid at 3.6GHZ with 1.264V. I have no regret buying this board. In fact, the computer generated so little heat that I can barely hear the fans running. (I have 4 120mm fans @ ~1000rpm. Core temperatures never exceed 55C running prime.)

However, if I must point out anything unsatisfactory, it would be my E8400. For the past 5 days, I have been trying to get the CPU stable @ 4GHz with voltage under 1.375V. That was not possible with all the tweaking I did. I can only manage stability @ 4GHz with voltage a little over 1.4V. I heard that 45nm C2Ds are very delicate, and voltage above 1.4V is not recommended. As a result, I cautiously pulled the OC back to 3.6GHz.

But that was the CPU, I am sure the board itself is excellent. You will have much fun with it.

The E8400 is outshined by the E8500 and the E8600. I've read on the net that with the P5Q Pro people are hitting 4GHz easily with those new chips.

Still, with the new E5200 (<100$) and a killer 12.5X multiplier, a lot of people will have 4GHz machinez!

Depends if you want cheap or expensive..My mobo you see in my signature was only $99 and I got my e6750 from 2.66Ghz to 3.4Ghz without even thinking twice. Gigabyte offer good reliable boards for medium OC's for a good price in my opinion.

For stock speed my $95 Gigabyte P43 chipset board has been flawless. It's supposedly able to OCan E8400 to 3.6 GHz just by setting the FSB to 400 but I haven't tried it.

I love my P5Q Pro. I bought the Gigabyte EP45-DS3R initially, had a lot of problem overclocking my E8400 above 3.5GHz. I returned the board and bought a Asus P5Q Pro and it's so much easier to OC. I'm at 4.0GHz with 1.34vcore now. ran orthos for 9.5 hours, solid stable.
