Malificent

Though I haven't seen it on DVD yet, I was impressed in-theater.

all also VERY good to test your sound system, ESPECIALLY pacific rim. that is up there as one of the top sounding movies of all time imo.

I imagine it sounds like: brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Skyfall is a good one for picture quality. Australia has some gorgeous scenes in it, even if it's a bit boring and 1.5 hours too long. If I had to choose 3, I'd go with Up, Despicable Me, and How to Train Your Dragon. Pretty much any animated movie in the last 10 years or remastered classics will look good. Definitely don't forget things like the BBC Planet Earth documentary.

For audio demos, I recommend chapter 3 of Super 8 (the train derailment).. Inception has some pretty decent demo scenes as well -- specifically the one with the freight train barreling through the street. Lastly, there's a bass drop toward the end of the first Transformers that will separate the good subs from the bad -- I think it's around 1hr56m but I'm not at home to check. It's the part where Ironhide (I think) flips over some lady screaming on the ground.

I got two SVS PB12-NSD's to replace my Klipsch Sub-10 this past spring. Pacific Rim is now a whole different movie. Relatively certain the house next door can feel when we're watching it

yeah, i have 2 18's and the bass in it is incredible. but it's not just like the loud obnoxious booming bass that sounds too loud. it is blended incredibly well with the rest of the soundtrack. bass isn't the only thing that sounds amazing in that movie, everything about the movie sounds great.

That's the important part.

That movie especially, the bass is there when it needs to be and isn't just a muddied mess. Even great subwoofers can't turn a garbage mix into something awesome.

yeah. you want to hear some garbage bass, watch the very opening scene of transformers 4. it's just a loud muddy boom for absolutely no reason. it sounds horrible. i had to turn my bass down for that entire movie.

Haha. You watched transformers.

yeah, i'm not like the internet and i don't hate anything popular/successful.

and i watch movies to be entertained, and the transformers are very entertaining. although 4 was definitely the worst of the bunch. wahlberg was just poorly casted imo.

i know i know ... it's not the norm around here.

i watched that within the past 6 months on bluray on my 120" screen and the picture/sound in that movie is meh. nothing special at all as far as sound and video quality goes.

Which PJ do you have? We have the same size screen. I'm still rocking a jvc rs15 that's like 5 years old and I keep thinking it might be time to upgrade but not a lot out there is exciting under $5k.

2001 a Space Odyssey of course is number 1. Then I would continue with some more Kubrick films, perhaps going to your avatar 2nd.

Also, Kurusawa epics are fucking awesome on a huge good screen.
7 Samurai is bigger than life

Recent films. Have you seen 13 assassins by Takashi Miike? It is fan-sparklng-tastic. It is a perfectly timed choreographed blood gauntlet of epic action. It is my Favorite Miike film.

Ooooh, how about the fade to black version of Lady Vengeance?

What about The hallway scene in Oldboy with the hammer

Raiders of the lost Ark?

Casablanca, the classic of classics!

Any 1980s Arnold S film, especially Terminator, Running Man, Predator, or Total Recall.

Robocop

Demolition Man

Stick to things that use practical effects, as the CGI generally looks/feels too phony ....

Ohh and also, Anything with Fatty Arbuckle. You need big screen to do the big man justice.

panasonic ae8000. here's a post with my setup.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=34852983&postcount=887

the a/v closet has no ps3 or 360 in there anymore, but has an xbox1 and ps4 instead. also has cable box in there with a stand alone bluray player. and i have some accoustical panels hanging up on the wall now too.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36015970&postcount=1

one of the major reasons i got the panasonic ae8000 is because it has minimal input lag and i do a lot of gaming on it, especially fighting games. it's comparable to my panasonic st50 plasma tv that i used prior to it. have to use both in game mode though.

I never imagined 3D was so popular. My TV is not 3D.

3D is gross to me. There is nothing appealing to me about it.

I'm assuming those 18's are DIY?

Haha. You watched transformers.

I've never turned off a movie that I can remember. Especially towards the end, I always want to know how a movie ends. I turned Transformers (one of them I think it was 2 maybe 3) off with 15 minutes remaining. Never went back to finish, just didn't care.

Any Pixar movie.

I'm gonna go way off and say Ben-Hur, the quality on the Blu-ray is amazing.
