Which movies would you watch right away on a new, bigger, and better TV?

I've been meaning to dedicate a few days to watching some movies with great visuals and sound. Now that the Christmas break is around the corner, this is my chance.

Which movies would be in your list?

Children of Men is a goddamn visual treat! The dimension and sense of depth is simply unreal - it has a muted palette, but the film (actually shot in film) is superb and on a great TV, might just blow you away if you care for such things.

What kind of movies do you like?

Here's a decent resource for Blu-Ray releases: http://www.blu-ray.com/
Top releases: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/top.php?show=userrating

I was blown away by a lot of the Disney transfers (Sleeping Beauty blew my mind, the visuals are spectacular and considering when it was made is just astounding at how much depth there is and the visuals just pop). Several of the Studio Ghibli movies have gotten transferred and they'd be worth checking out as well. And of course Pixar.

Oh and stuff like Baraka (there's one or two other kinda similar movies that I can't think of from like the 80s where they're just about the visual and maybe aural spectacle) or Planet Earth, and similar.

As long as the masters are still around, and are of sufficient quality, even the next recording format (what comes after Blu-ray, be it physical or digital delivery of higher resolution and bitrate), transfers of old films will continue to blow us away and improve.

Film, if stored properly, can last a long time in archival conditions. More importantly, film can contain a great deal of "resolution" - the quality of the film, specifically the size and type of grain, determine the potential. Modern movies shot in film still look better than all-digital movies. And they'll match whatever the next bump in quality is, I am quite sure.

both of those in 3d are spectacular as well.

did you get a new sound system as well or something? you talk about the TV in the title but then talk about sound in the OP.

2001. One of the first things I watched when I got my projector and it was freaking epic.

in that case ...

saving private ryan
black hawk down
lone survivor
rush
gravity
terminator salvation (has some crazy sound parts)

+1 for Black Hawk Down. Also The Matrix is still great for visuals and sounds and is a must for everyone.

I would also have to watch:
Gladiator
LA Confidential
Terminator 1

Those were the top two that jumped into my head as well. Frankly, anything from Pixar is going to be spectacular, as their blu-rays are always flawless. Finding Nemo is the most visually appealing to me personally, but Wall-E, The Incredibles, Toy Story 3... they all have their moments of jaw-dropping beauty. And it's not just Pixar; animated films in general. Kung Fu Panda, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, Frozen, Rio, Madagascar 3.... they might not all be good movies, but they look damn impressive.

Honestly, anything that you like that also provides some sense of spectacle is going to be worth watching on a giant screen. The original Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Die Hard, The Lord of the Rings trilogy... it's all good. I'm a big fan of BBC nature documentaries like Planet Earth, Life and Frozen Planet; bet those look stunning on a big screen.

How big did you go? My wife and I are upgrading from a dying 52" to a 65", so I'll probably be back in a week to pull recommendations out of this thread myself.

Keeping in mind that visually striking and a good movie aren't necessarily synonymous but here are some of my go to movies.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Alien Blu-Ray is probably the best transfer of an old movie I've ever seen. It is amazing.
Aliens
Terminator 2
Matrix
Pacific Rim
Pretty much anything that is a space movie

Great visuals best viewed in 3D
Gravity
Avatar
Guardians of the Galaxy
Pretty much any of the IMAX space documentaries
And probably the most underrated is Final Destination 5 in 3D...I was actually pretty blown away by the way they did this movie (and..it's way better than 2-4).

the new TMNT also had awesome visuals and sound. i haven't watched it in 3d yet but i got it on bluray this past week and plan on watching it in 3d tonight on my big screen. when i saw it in the theater i could tell it was one of those movies that would be good in 3d.

if you are into 3d at all OP, in addition to the ones that impulse mentioned, i'd strongly recommend the following in 3d:

finding nemo (already recommended this, but in 3d it's even better)
jurassic park (probably the best 3d i've seen of "live action" for most of the movie.
dawn of the planet of the apes - this was REALLY good in 3d.

When I got my new receiver a few years ago I fired up LOTR Trilogy, Avatar, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan and U571 all on BR. Had a blast.

Oh I know (I think they said that a little beyond 8K is about the limit of visual quality that 35mm film offers) and the transfer quality is getting better and better.

But compare the DVD and Blu-Ray versions of, well a lot of movies, but Disney's in particular are just another level on Blu-Ray. They got waaaaaaay better transfers. It really shouldn't surprise that much that older animation that was done with a lot of care where they can work with the original cells would be a step up, but it still is astounding at how much depth and visual panache they had going. With some of the scenes there's a bit of the wonkiness from the difference between the background and the animation cells (where the background are basically one big long painting with the animation cells overlaid on top of them and transitioned along). Not bad though (in fact those are the ones that really wowed me with how much depth there was).

I'm not going to get into the film vs digital as that's in no way a cut and dry thing (the issue isn't how or on what it's being recorded but rather a lot of other issues, although you could argue that digital makes it easier to use or do things that I think looks terrible). And right now yeah a bunch of movies are being shot on digital that has less final quality potential than great quality film (but not all film was equal, let alone the people using, editing, and handling it; but yes with quite a lot of digital being done on 4K recording equipment, film has more potential). Right now we're unfortunately in a weird period where we're making big gains in digital technology while being saddled with a lot of historical status quo. Most importantly though is that we don't have a lot of filmmakers who know how to balance the two well.

I never imagined 3D was so popular. My TV is not 3D.

Ah well you didn't point that out. It's not that it is popular, there are just some really visually striking movies in 3D if your tv is big enough. Most of those movies also look great w/o 3D, they just pop more with it.
