Actually, the combat in Jumpgate Evolution should be similar to an arcade space sim like Freespace, so it will be quite skill based.

Yup. I hated EVE because of the lack of control over the ship. I loved Freelancer though. I'm really hoping it will be something along the lines of an MMO Freelancer.

Honestly, is this even worth saying anymore? there isn't a single MMO on the market that has come even remotely close to being in the same solar system to being skill based, despite the fact that they all claim to be.

I'm just curious as to what you consider skill based gaming? Twitch shooters?

Eve. Greatest MMO ever. You know why it doesn't have a huge market share? its learning curve goes up at a 90 degree angle

Balanced RTS games, Balanced TBS games, puzzle fighter type games, 'Twitch' FPS shooters ( people seem dead-set and determined to refer to them as twitch, when I have seen COUNTLESS players with minimal/average reflexes straight up destroy players with excellent aim. Movement is an incredible skill to hone.) Virtually every genre has an element of skill that fits within it's play style, developers just no longer include them because players don't want them. They instead want to be 'good' by spending more time than other players and 'beating' them. Thus the MMO was born.

I imagine skill will make some difference in this game...

What MMO's have you played where you can make such a broad judgment. I can think of several MMO's where a more skillful team/player will beat a team/player that simply grinds more. I'm not even a big MMO player either and I believe I'm a pretty "skillful" gamer in other genres, but a few bad experiences doesn't warrant such thread crapping.

I try virtually every MMO that comes out. I even lvled a warrior to 60 in WoW back when that was the level cap. A friend paid for my game/account and told me it was awesome, then he told me it would be awesome when i got to sixty... It was never awesome.

I played the AoC beta.
Asherons Call
Everquest
EVE Online
Anarchy Online
Guild Wars
World of Warcraft
3985195 different Korean MMO's
the list goes on.

Time = Gear > player input.

Which MMO to play? Doesn't matter as long as you have friends to run amuck around in the world with who also enjoy playing the same mmo.

Bio one will almost certainly be Star Wars (KOTOR-era). They claim it will be different and story-based, but who knows how that's supposed to happen exactly...

The outcry from the die-hards when it's nothing like (the original) SWG will be hilarious, though. Bioware doesn't do sandbox games.

I'd have to say it's more because the game is not fun for the majority of the mmo population than because it's complicated

How do you make the Time = Gear > Player Input when it comes to WoW now? As far as arena gear goes all you need to do is play 10 games per week, and at the right time of day, that can take no more than an hour. Yes, you'll have to do a bit of the honor grind to get the non-set pieces, but considering you have an entire arena season (many months) to do it I wouldn't say that's too much to ask. With the personal rating the items have now, and all items will have personal ratings come Season 4, how can you claim it takes no skill? Certain people will NEVER get these items unless they're good regardless of gear. You HAVE to find a team that's good enough to get a good rating. Same could be said for end game raiding - yes, you do need the gear and that does take time, but you also need to find people that are good enough (quick reflexes, know what's going on, able to adapt, etc.) to learn/beat some of the boss fights. It seems like all you do is focus on the aspects that back up your points, and on none of those that don't - but I guess that's the point, isn't it?

I'm looking forward to WAR a lot, I like the gameplay (combat controls Imean) from WoW and such but I don't like how the PVP is structured in WoW. WAR seems to be way more focused on pvp and RVR, so hopefully it lives up to my expectations.

I think the majority of MMO publishers struggle with balancing the game between the casual/fun crowd and the power gamer/lives in mommies basement type that can sink 100+ hours a week into a game.

I've quit mmos after tiring of dealing with the above personalities. Strangely, the people with the best attitudes seemed to be in Eve Online. Don't know why.
