For a laptop the best value is an iBook. $1799 get you the iBook with CD-RW/DVD combo. Apple may not be the best value for a desktop, but as far as laptops go Apple has the best value.

Compaq 1215US...
1 ghz Athlon4, DVD/CDRW, 20 gig HD, 128Meg RAM, NIC, 14.1 TFT.

$1499 at Best Buy or Circuit City...
And PowerNow really works...

Don't let them talk you into the Best Buy service plan.

One more vote for Compaq. Many models to choose from. I just bought a Compaq laptop. If possible get one with at least a 14.1" or better yet 15" TFT screen. You won't regret it. TFT any size as a minimum. Ebay has a lot availbable, some new, some used, some refurbished. New is always better. Good luck.

Although I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 and have purchased several other Inspiron 4000's, I recently got an IBM from their $bay site. I was really impressed the the quality and design of the IBM. If you can live with the eraser head, and can add your own software, I would take a look at IBM on $bay.

the Dell Inspiron 8100 with the 15" UXGA screen is dope! 1600x1200 is really nice. Not sure if you will be able to get it under that price, esp. including shipping + tax.

If you get a Caompaq, get a Presario 1700 or one of the business models (Armada or Evo). The Presario 1200 and 1800 series suck IMO. They're big and fugly, and that case they use is based on a very old design. I know it sounds nice with a 1ghz Athlon, but there are nicer models.
