Unless you have someone who can pull strings for you, it is rather difficult to get such a position. My brother-in-law has a Master's from OISE, Un.Toronto and has been doing substitute teaching while applying to schools around London, Ont for almost 8 years now and just can't get in. True, in Toronto or Ottawa it would be a bit easier to find a job, but those cities are more expensive too, and his wife has a job in London. And I have a colleague from work whose wife also can't get into public schools (and this is in Toronto), so she works in a private school, and these pay less and their benefits are not nearly as good.Certainly not journalism. No jobs for noobs in that field at all. Frustrating as hell since that's what my diploma is in.
Depending on the region, education. In Ontario, senior teachers can make up to $80,000-$90,000 plus benefits, get what's basically equal to three months vacation, and a pension that can't be beat. Basically full pay for life once you retire. I think starting pay is $40,000 plus benefits.
