Seagate is the best save for the WD Raptor which is loud but fast with a 5 year warranty

I will buy Seagates in the future. The only reason I would buy a western digital is for a raptor. To be honest, I don't think it really matters though.

I've used many HDD brands including WD, Seagate, Maxtor, IBM etc. usually there's very little difference between them (as long as you take comparable models),
and as long as it doesn't die on you (which can happen with any one) then you should be happy with one, just as well as with the other one.

Poll is flawed since only one choice can be made and further semantically flawed since most readers simply would not buy from any of the companies, directly.

I'd buy a Hitachi, Samsung and Western Digital. I would not buy a Seagate (or Maxtor branded Seagate). Not much reason to buy genuine older Maxtor anymore either.

my experience:
150gb raptor (owned for 6 months, runs fine, temps fine, noise fine)
160gb 7200.7(owned for 2 years, runs fine, temps cool, noise quiet)
320gb 7200.10(owned for 2 weeks, runs fine, temps warmer than raptor, noise fine)

Seagate - Over the years I've had failures from Fujitsu (?), IBM/Hitachi, WD, and Maxtor.

Percentage-wise I've seen/had several IBMs (all failed within 3 years use), several WDs (but none recently), a couple of Maxtors, but NO Seagates of many used, some for 5 years. I stick with Seagate. No experience with Samsung. I used lots of Maxtors back when WD was having probs with their early 7200 drives, and only two failures out of about 15 after 3-4 years, so they are my second choice. WD is the only drive I've ever owned that failed after only a couple of months, and this happened more than once.

I never use anything near the largest capacities and I always make sure they are installed with room to breathe. I think those two things amke more difference than the brand.

Why can't I choose two...
Seagate or Western Digital. I have a pair of Seagate 7200.10 320GB HDDs in my main rig, and they're running fast and quiet. But I have an armful (eight to be exact) Western Digital drives of varying capacities (one to thirty GB) from the last 13 years, and all of them still work fine.

I currently have four Western Digital 400gb RE2's, two Western Digital 150gb Raptors, and one 74gb Raptor. I'm happy with them. A friend of mine refuses to buy Western Digital's, and prefers Seagates, which I won't buy... Go figure.

Seagates for performance, Samsung for quiet drives... Seagate/Hitachi for Mobile... and again Samsung for a quiet mobile drive

Based on at least those results, I'd look to Hitachi and Western Digital for performance before Seagate unless I needed a small or mid-range capacity drive cheap (then I'd go for the 250 gig 7200.10 w/16mb cache).

Based on anandtech's reviews (Hitachi was not included):

Western Digital still comes out looking great in the performance sector, not even counting the Raptors. Both the WD5000YS and the WD4000YR are stiff competition to 7200.10 drives.

Seagate I choose for reliability first and foremost. At least with the 7200.10, they're a bit more competitive performance-wise, but they still can't beat Hitachi and Western Digital, even without taking Raptors into consideration.
