Hi All,

I have an old computer 850 mhz duron with iwill kk266. And my friend have athlon 900 mhz slot A with asus K7M-RM.
other stuffs basically the same. like 512 mb memory, basic video card. I just wondering which one is faster?
anybody have experience with both of them?

thank you so much for the reply

It probably depends on the task. The Athlon 900 is a faster chip, but it's working with 133mhz memory as opposed to 200mhz with the Duron. They're definately only within a few percentage points of one another, but if I had to guess I'd say the Duron would edge out the Athlon system by a couple points on most benchmarks due to its higher FSB.

If the Athlon is a Tbird, I'd vouch for the Athlon because the Duron was pretty short on the cache. If the Athlon is a slot K7-5, I'd guess the Duron's a tad faster.

I would go with the Duron...don't the slot A Athlons w/ 512K cache run at 1/3 speeds...?

so you all think that Slot A will be much slower than socket A even if it's duron
oh ya by the way the memory is the same PC100 SDRAM

joo NOOBS!!! that slot A 900mhz, is either full speed L2, or half speed L2.

that duron spitfire only has 64 L2 cache, but it runs full speed.

both has 128mb full speed L1 cache.

now if the slotA chip is only half speed L2, the duron maybe be faster for certain things only cuz its faster L2 cache, but if that slot A is full speed L2 caache, then the SLOT A 900 will beat the duron all thhe time

Slot A Athlon (not T-Bird) is has the 1/3 cache speed. link Intel Pentium III was the only one to do 1/2 speed for all of it's Slot 1 CPUs. I think the Athlon Slot A stopped 1/2 speed at 700 MHz, then it went 2/5 until 900 MHz.

More on cache Dividers

Like someone else said, if it's the T-Bird Slot A then it'll be full speed of the CPU.

For the original poster, if you look through the old reviews you might find a configuration that could see which is faster.

oh i was wrong, its either full speed or 1/3 speed for 900mhz slotA. theres are two types of 900mhz. not all are 1/3 speed.

also, coppermines first came on slot1 but its full speed. not all slot 1's are katmai's.

Hi All
thanks for the answer.

the reason i ask this because my friend said that his Slot A athlon 900 Mhz is slower than his compaq k62-450 if i'm not wrong.
is that possible?

possible if his 900 has very little ram and lots of software booting along with windows and the 450 is highly optimized

D

P.S. I had a 486 with a turbocharger that was faster than some P2s some of my friends had, its all about housekeeping

Hmm, Athlon 900 slower than K6-2 450? Not very possible... unless he loaded his Athlon system with spyware etc that makes it run much less efficiently.

As for SSE, no AMD chip until the 1500-1800+ had it.

Athlon classic did have a newer 3D-Now! IIRC.

I doubt he benchmarked the CPU alone, he means the whole system and thats possible, like I earlier said its all about good housekeeping (taking the garbage out makes a whole lot of difference )
