Gee if one is so concerned about the power loss (nil) of modular why not go all the way - aka crazy audiophile style - get rid of ALL of those pesky connectors and freaking SOLDER the wires right to the PCB of your drives, video card and motherboard?

Here is the charts.

Sure - most systems don't have more than 2 drives. Typically with 4 or more they are connected to a real hardware host which allows staggered spindle spin up timings. Mine does (11 drives total) but I've had them click on - all at once across the line! :Q The host will use a .5 sec spin up delay as configured (currently) and all is well.

I've seen systems with just two drives power on for two sec and power back off because of the hard drives. Usually this is with the noname junk in those $80 boxes (chassis with power supply) but (hopefully) not too many serious users of the enthusiast crowd is using them.

The worst modular out there is the Hyper that uses DIN like microphone jacks. They look like small chrome udders. Those use shared pins at the PSU. Sad really!

I've seen those and even had others (name withheld) try to argue with me that I didn't know what I was talking about when I said those connectors were NOT aerospace type connectors. I knew they were mic connectors (popular on CB/Amateur radio microphone connectors) just by spotting them. I showed this to one of our engineers with 30+ years experience in the biz and he laughed. Go figure.

Does most server products from IBM, HP or DELL have this capability? Powering up drives sequentially, not all at once?

jonny, stop being lazy If your PSU calc could also give a few suggestions, when it for example sais someone needs a 500w PSU, the PSU calculator also tells him that this or that PSU are good/popular choices. Such a thing would save many people from asking the same question over and over on this forum, and hopefully save them some bucks too when someone tells them to buy a 1k watt PSU, when all they need is a 500w PSU.

I know I would appreciate it when I'm in the market again for a new PSU.

One question btw, how good/reliable do you, or galvanizedYankee, rate the coolermaster 650w Extreme power? (RP-650-PCAP)

This thread is all over the map!

I'm pretty sure that the CM 650 is provided by Enhance and if it can be had cheap, it is an OK unit. I would not pay over $60 for it retail.

The reason I am making a big deal is because when I look at the watts of the PS, Corsair HX620W, it looks really small. I know looking at the watts doesn't mean anything. I do like the Corsair HX620W when it comes to price. I can buy this right away.

I really do like the Enermax Infiniti 720W because of the more watts. But comapred to the Corsair, it is more expensive. I just need to make sure that the power supply that I get will power my system without any problems. I don't want to have power problems down the road. Also I don't plan to run my system 24/7 either.

So if you guys think that the Corsair HX620W is the way to go, then let me know. I hope that it can power my system to the fulliest. And it would be really good on my budgets.

Thx for all the input!

P.S. Fusion

Not all drives have spin-up specs listed. Here's the 750GB specs.

Spinup 2.4 A (Max) 515 mA 25.4 W

Hey Guys I just wanted to give you an update to my choice of power supply and I have gone with your guys choice and picked the one and only "Corsair HX620W." I got a really sweet deal on it. It was $127.39 Plus S/H $8.95 and the Grand Total was: $136.34. I got a really nice deal for a really good Power Supply.

Now the waiting begins...

Thx for all your guys help!

P.S. Fusion!

Then tell us how much it uses? I'm really dying to know, more or less.

Q6600, nVidia 8800GTS/320, 4x1GB sticks, 4x500GB HDDs, 1 DVDRW, Hauppauge dual tuner, Acer E700 mb/case/9-in-one/etc., ...

.... Kill A Watt says 295W from the wall, max, and about 250W normally. So my 300W LiteOn is working great.

(Still, a month and oh, a week or three later...)

It _would_ be interesting to see how much more power another 8800GTS/X would require. If the entire thing needed over 450-500W or so I'd be very surprised.
