Which OS for my system? 2000, ME, or 98SE?

I have all three and I was just wondering which I should install. I really don't feel like dualbooting, so I just want to choose one.

I want it to be fast and stable. I am leaning towards 98SE because it's the most stable (i've heard) and can be the fastest, but I like ME for it's easy networking. 2000 is O.K. for me, but I really like to play Counter-Strike and I've heard games aren't as fast in 2000 as in 98SE or ME.

Well, help me decide please!

98 more stable than 2000? Well, I haven't had that experience. I would go with 2000, but thats just me. As far as gaming I would say that 2000 is just about as fast as 98. I love 2000 and I think you will get a lot more of these opinions on here. As long as you have a decent processor (350 Mhz+, which you do) and 128MB of ram or more (definitely have that too) you should enjoy Windows 2000. Luck. Check out my rig and then know that I think its great for gaming. Yeah, on this old crate.

I'll second that, Win2K so far is the most stable Windows ever for me. It uses memory more effectively than Windows 98, off course more is better. 256MB should do just fine though.

Another vote for 2000 over here. I play CS and a few other games with no problems on Windows 2000. Plus you just can't beat the stability compared to the other OS's you mentioned.

the only reason you might not get windows 2000 is if you have less then 128 mb of ram. after that, it might be too cumbersome for your tastes. But fear not for your games. Most video card drivers now offer excellent performance in win2k (except Ati, but last ive heard they got their drivers up to date as well). So your counter-strike should run just fine

256Megs of memory will be best suited by Win2k. I haven't had any problems running CS under Win2k.

If your a gamer hands down Win98 SE dont be sucked in to running 2000 for stabliity issues. Yeah its stable, but its gaming support sucks donkey dik. and besides Micro$oft reccommends Win98SE as a gaming platform

how, exactly, does its gaming support suck "donkey dik"? If you look at the benchmarks done compared with win98 and win2k, they're very similar, and a vast majority of them are identical. Even ATI has begun to improve their drivers substantially. And as to Microsoft stating this, I am assuming this was stated at least a year or two ago, because even their new flagship OS Windows XP is closer in heritage to Windows 2000 then to Windows 98. Windows 98 is becoming obsolete. Go for Windows 2000

I'm going to have to say WIN98SE. I know most people love 2000, but my experience with games and everything else makes 98 better, even if it isn't as stable. Stability issues only show up after about 24hrs. anyway. Just turn your computer off before you go to bed (and save energy)

I've been running Win2000 only since October, and I play all my games just fine.

And Win98 can be fairly stable on a well setup system....but Win2000 can run for months without a reboot. Win98 can't do that just becuase of memory leaks.

Win2000 is the better OS in pretty much every category.

Games run fine under 2K, anyone who says otherwise hasn't actually used 2K for games. Plus, Windows 2000 is the most stable OS I've ever had. Go ahead, install it, you'll love it

I started dual booting in October. I fire up 98 about once a month now. Before this I used to say my 98 system was very stable. I had little problems. Now I say 98 was unstable as ----.

2000 is very stable. If something goes down the OS doesn't go with it. Keep in mind I am not a gamer. But one more vote for 2000.

You got precisely what it is worth $0.005

If you're the kind of guy who asks this kind of question, you need Win98SE.

Don't even THINK about WinME.

Win2k is fine if you want to throw a lot of memory at an OS that doesn't run even half the software that Win98SE can run.
