Which PC gamer are you?

May as well put it to the poll to get some insights.

Are you still the desktop PC gamer, on a mouse/keyboard or are you the new gen-Y convert, gaming from your couch in the living room?

Which PC gaming method do you predominantly do?

Edit: I know some people often game on a wide variety of setups, even consoles, tablets/phones etc. The poll is intended to when you game on your PC. I should have an option for those who setup their PC to monitor with mouse/kb and also to big TV + gamepad, ie. both. But I figured you must do one more/predominantly than the other.

Typical desk setup. I can guarantee I will never game from a couch on a big TV, my lack of vision is at least 100% responsible for this.

I game from my couch and use a mouse and keyboard, so I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.

PC monitor and desk. I hate using TVs for PC gaming, unless its a fps, which I use a console anyways.

All the best equipment is in my bedroom, the TV downstairs is still a big CRT, not even HD. Plus there would be nowhere to fit the surround sound.

Despite this I do tend to sit further back on my bed more often than at my desk on the chair. More comfortable and the image on the monitor gels together better, it looks a lot less rough around the edges.

Of course FPS's and Strategy games need close attention

Well this poll is severely limited and as my main choice fits between the 2 options. I have a small desk in the living room where my primary PC is located. It is also connected to my 65" Samsung 4K TV but only used when my nephews are round playing Lego games or similar. My TV does have HDMI 2.0 which is why as of Saturday it is powered by 980 Ti SLI rather than a future Fury (X possibly) CF as I had planned.

I do have a separate room with currently 8 working PC's (2 others being rebuilt) and 1 server.

Silverforce11: Why such a limited poll?

I don't know which to vote.

I play my MMOs and some RTS at the desk.

But I also play all the console ports and some of the indie platformers on the TV.

I'd say I'm probably 50/50 with more time spent on the TV.

I prefer the desk though, if I had to pick between the two. I could still play all the same games at the desk, I can't play the MMOs and RTS'es on the TV.

Either way, people should really be enjoying a healthy mix of the two.

Typical desk BUT I am thinking to move a SFF build to living room/den when the Oculus is out...more room to move around.

Depends on the game. Console style gaming goes on the TV (or kicking back on a sofa in the office), mouse driven strategy games go at the desk.

I still have an old skool setup of desktop under my desk, that said the PC gaming is done in the living room. Any local co-op game that can be played with console controllers is often played on the big TV - I just plug the laptop into it. Works well. Having 4 360 controllers due to also owning a 360 means you can use the PC like a console really easily with a cheap MS USB dongle to allow the controllers to work on the PC.

Need a 4th option. My TV (soon to be much bigger TV hopefully) is on a typical desk setup.

Given the discussion that led to the creation of this thread, the intention is obviously to show that PC gamers still use a monitor at a desk:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=37497400&postcount=2404

There's also a bit of an undercurrent of Fury defense, given that it doesn't have HDMI 2.0 and is therefore not capable of driving a 4K TV: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=37499013&highlight=#post37499013

We know for a fact that many games are designed for consoles, and that is in part because they play better with console controls (and not the other way around). Sure, you can still play them with a mouse and keyboard, but they are very limiting in this mode. I'm thinking of racing games and third-person adventure games in particular.

A more interesting poll would be whether people use M/KB, controller, or both. Any serious gamer should have a controller on hand, regardless of whether it's used on a TV or on a monitor.

I was hoping this wasn't going to be brought up in this thread so I am just going to say it now...

Please don't even discuss Fury in this thread. Once this topic has been said, it will spur an argument and we don't need that.
Stick to the topic or this thread will be locked.

Silverforce11 - please update your poll to include both or I will.

Do not start with Fury, it was NEVER about Fury and the lack of HDMI 2.

It was a statement that "PC Gaming has moved to the living room, period" that threw me off (I was thinking maybe I've been out in the loop too long and PC gaming went all Hipster!) because most PC gamers I know IRL are still the typical desk/monitor kb/mouse type. I do know some with an optional TV which takes PC/console inputs as well but its not their main PC gaming setup.

@Rvenger
Change it please. Option #3: Both, depending on the game.

Changed, thanks.

Desk with a big monitor... I've gotten so used to being so close to the screen, that I can't even game on a 60" screen if I'm not close to it anymore. I prefer being up close and being able to see everything crystal clear.

heh - i recently tried console gaming with some friends (havent played on one since the sega mega drive days) - and i wanted to smash the controllers on the wall. it was literally infuriating to use. i think im happily sticking with a k/b&m for a while to come.

Looks like on this forum at least, the assertion "PC gaming has moved to the living room. Period." is completely off base. One wonders how people arrive at such conclusions
