I am going to be moving at the end of this month. I currently live in a 1 bed/1bath apt but they are jacking up my rent, and I dont want to sign another 1 year lease.. btw archstone aprtment sucks! they dont even have a reasonable month to month option after you stay for a whole year!

There are 3 place candidates that I am considering:

Place A: This is a very nice 800 sq ft 1 bed 1 bath condo. rent is $1550 a month, slightly less than what I am paying now ($1600 a month). This place is close to work (only 2 freeway exits) and the apt is very nice. Comes with 2 covered parking. 6 month lease and after that rolls into month by month, and it is rent controlled! so my rent will stay pretty much the same. I still have to pay utilities though. My only complaint is the rent.. I dont way to pay that much

Place B: This is a 1 bed 1 bath duplex. The owner is asking for $1200 a month utilities included. However I think I can lower it to $1000 or $1100 a month. It has garage parking as well. The apt is quite spacious but it does not have an oven.. and the kitchen is kind of small. This place is closest to work (I can almost walk to work)

Place C: This is a room in a very nice house in the nice part of town. The houses there are million dollar houses. The rent is $850 a month with utilities included (even hbo, cinemax, etc), with garage parking. I will have to share a bathroom with someone else, but the person is away 2 weeks of the month on business trips. The room is quite spacious (14 by 13 feet). Also every 2 weeks someone comes in and clean up the whole house. This place is pretty close to work aswell, but furthest away compared to the other two. I met the owner of the place and I think she is very nice, and the house is super quiet. All the people that life there are professionals (like me), so it wont be a party house (a good thing).

Which one should I choose? I am planning to buy a condo when prices cool down.. and that can be anywhere from 6 months to 1 year from now.. so thats why I dont want to sign another 1 year lease

I don't see how B can be an option without an oven. That's just silly.

A's rent is pretty high. I'd have to say C, especially since it's somewhat temporary.

C would be nice as long as you meet and chat a little bit with each of the people there. If not, A, even though it is more expensive. B just sounds kind of ratty.

BTW, where abouts are you located?

C. save the dough. altho.. i don't see how going from your current 3 bd to a 1bd is going to fair... that is just going to suck no matter where you move. how much are they jacking it up? and how far from work is it? I really don't see A as a good option.

I went there today and only the owner was there. The whole place was empty. It was the same when I saw it about a month ago. The other people are older than me and all of them are professionals.

I am in socal.. in the sfv area

Also, how many square feet is the house? Do you get your own fridge? Is it a house house or is it a house that was built to accomidate many people that are not actually family?

the house is two story with a small pool in the back yard. It has a 3 car garage, and I think 4 rooms total. No I wont get my own fridge, but the kitchen is very nice and large. the Living room is also very nice, the owner will put in a plasma tv pretty soon.
It is a house house.
