I'm registered republican, but my views are very different from my peers/president.

Here's a list of my view points. Help me figure out which party I should consider myself.

-I supported the war in Iraq.
-I support stem cell research and government funding of the research.
-I don't like abortion but I don't think it should be illegal.
-I support gays/minorities having equal rights (marrage included).
-I don't think the government has a right to interfere with peoples personal life.
-I'm against tariffs and support free trade.
-I think America should continue to fund it's military and maybe even increase funding.
-I don't like having a big government outside of vital areas (Military, police).
-I'm not religous.
-I support business and feel that businesses big and small are what power the country. Workers come second.
-I'm against social welfare programs.
-The patriot act = trash.

Please don't point out that any of these believes contradict one another, it would be impossible for me to revise this to the point where no one could find fault. For instance I'm for government funded research but against big government. What I mean by that is we should cut social welfare programs and funnel the money into research.

In short I have a reason for believing the way I do.

Does a political party that fits me even exist? Ask further questions about my opinions if you need to.

What am I?

You sound a lot like me.. I was so ready to support Bush after 2000, especially when it came to his aggressive attitude towards terrorism, but his social stances and policies within the US, (Patriot Act Included) make it impossible for me to support him.. As a lifelong Democrat I was so close to turning the other way, perhaps if someone like Mcain or another moderate within the Republican party runs, I may..

You're a lot like most people in the United States I'm sure. That is, before they are convinced to vote against their beliefs. Hopefully we can get some decent candidates in '08.

Individualist conservative... free minds, free markets, and strong military.

You fit in the Republican party although you are not in the majority.

Pro-choice (overall), pro-science (stem cells), pro-gay-marriage (not even all Dems can say that, most cop-out at civil unions), anti-Patriot Act.

I'd say you have a lot that falls into the Democrats, with some items that take you to moderate/moderate-Republican area. Mostly Dem I'd think.

Cool, you have the exact same stances that I do. I don't think there's a safe party in America for you - you have to pick the least of two evils come each election. Hopefully Giuliani puts up a bid for 2008, though I have to wonder if people are going to remember how hated he was around NYC before 9/11 occurred...

You sound like a Libertarian, except they have been one of the most out-spoken groups against the war.

That's a big "except." He says he wants support for vital things like the army. There is nothing vital about what is going on in Iraq or are grossly oversized armed forces. It also sounds like he supports corporate welfare and giving them unatural advantages (like harming workers). Workers are economic agents just like corporations. They don't deserve less treatment in a libertarian model. In fact, seeing as corporations are a government invention, I'm not sure how they fit in to a hardline libertarian view.

I'd say he's pretty much a traditional pre-zealot-overtake Republican. He should fight to get his party back.

A tariff is a tax on trade, used either to protect American industry, or simply generate funds. So when a ship comes into a harbor a tax must be payed on its goods. Tariffs can be placed on imports or exports, but I believe it's more often placed on imports. For example, an import tarriff is placed on steel, making foreign steel more expensive, thereby protecting American Steel manufacturers.

You're an independent. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Vote your conscience and who you feel will do better for the people of your area, state and country.

I think it's safe to say that he has less in common with Independents than with Republicans.

You sound fairly libertarian. About the military, you do realize the military budget is about $480 billion, right? I don't think that covers Iraq and Afghanistan either (correct me if I'm wrong there).

Another question that might help determine if you're closer to the libertarian spectrum is: Do you support corporate welfare?

In general I feel a business should survive on it's own.

-Amp

p.s. I know the military is expensive. But I still feel it's important that we maintain our status as a superpower.

To the original poster. It sounds like you might be a moderate Libertarian. The Libertarians tend to support a free market economy as well as personal freedoms and secularism.

I'm tempted to say that you would be a moderate Republican (as opposed to a Neocon), but based on the Republican Party's current identity, it seems like it might be hard for you (and moderate Republicans themselves) to identify with the Republican Party. I'm not sure you could be classified as a moderate Democrat either since it's nearly impossible to tell exactly what the Democrats stand for today other than, "We're not the Republicans so we can't be as bad as they are."

Right now I'm an independent since I despise both the Republicans and the Democrats, and I disagree with the Libertarians anarcho-capitalism and also with the socialists and communists. Overall I'm probablly a moderate libertarian. I'd agree with the Libertarians in areas of personal freedoms (legalize drugs and prostitution, get the government out of promoting religion and out of our personal lives) but disagree with them in some areas of economics (unrestrained immigration, unregulated international trade, laissez-faire capitalism at home).

Decent candidates in 2008? I can't imagine we'll get decent candidates from either of the two parties. Is it even possible to get elected to Congress or to a governorship while being a decent candidate today?

We might see Hillary (I love TATA Consulting and don't mind when American jobs are sent to India) Clinton versus another Republican Neocon. Poison or poison. Some choice.
