I'm building a system for a friend and I'm not sure which psu to get. The budget is about $40, I've narrowed the choice down to this fortron unit and this allied.
Both has good reviews, and the price is about the same.
So the question is which is better? Which is quieter? And Which is cooler?
thanks

Not to make it even more complicated, but have you considered this one? I have an Enlight 300W power supply that has served me well for over 2 years running a fairly loaded system. And I have the new 420 watt unit with the dual fans that has worked excellently on my overclocked XP1700 @ 2.1 Ghz system with overclocked GF4 Ti4200. That 360W Enlight unit matches the Antec price, but provides more power where you need it. I would go for the Enlight over either one of the others, based on my personal experience. Tough call.

I recently purchased the Allied one you linked too, and to me its quiet, especially considering it has 2 fans. Or at least its not any louder than my previous generic 300w "enhance" brand power supply that only had one fan.

Neither. Don't skimp on arguably the most critical part of your system with some generic power supply unit. Go with something quality: Antec.

Unless you have a Tyan s2460!
My mobo PS connector was burnt recently and by digging at 2cpu.com forums I found out it is a known problem with combination of that motherboard and ANTEC psus.

I thought the ATX spec. was to have the PS intake on the bottom, near the CPU. The Allied units seem to have it on the side opposite the exhaust fan, like it used to be before the spec. changed.

What's the deal?

no idea, but as long as it works, i don't care.
I think I'll go with the fortron because according to tomshardware's review, it's really a 450 watt unit and is very quiet. The antec is also very good, but I like the 450 watt for some extra assurance.

I hear ya. The reason I brought this up is IIRC, there was alot of talk about this on PSUs when the spec. changed. With the opening opposite the exhaust, one could argue that this sucks hot air from the top of the case, versus from near the CPU, so the overall cooler difference may be neglible.

The Allied has 2 fans. It'll be louder than the Fortron. On the other hand, the Fortron has a speed control on the fan, and the sound of it speeding up and winding down might be more annoying to you than a louder supply that runs at a constant decibel level.

And here's another one at NewEgg that bears consideration, the Sparkle FSP350-60BT. It's really a Fortron OEM. Tom's has it in their review as the "Conrad" FSP350-60BTP, and it put out a max of 454W and 38.5db.

Go with the Fortron one. Allied is crap stuff....Fortron has been winning accolades all over. Check out Toms review...and this one is a hot favorite amongst mods and power users at oc-forums.com. You cant go wrong with experience.

btw, Fortron and Sparkle group are one and the same. All the power supplies that have FSP are made by Fortron/Sparkle Group.

With certain Antec Power supplies you get free shipping from www.googlegear.com/

Free shipping is always great.

Googlegear also has free shipping on processors so make 2 separate orders, if you have not ordered yet. These guys have good prices on the high-end Antec power supplies. They even carry the 550 watt model with the controller that goes in the 5.5 bay.

I reread your post, and I want you to know I just used an Antec 300 W Power supply in a system that I purchased from New Egg for $39.00 and they charged me no shipping cost for an Antec High Quality power supply. I can strongly recommend this option. This power supply is rated for both P4 and AMD.

.Toms Hardware has done several tests of power supplies and the Antec power supplies always come out top rated.

This meets your $40.00 target price!
