Boise, ID might be you kind of town.

Liberal by Idaho standards
Regional healthcare center
University town
Cold but not "We're all gonna die cold"
All sorts of recreation just to the north

I would like to say: "any place without illegal aliens" but that doesnt seem to exist anymore. So instead I'll just say go wherever you can get a job. Any region is nice so long as you can afford to live well.

It's the modern, socially acceptable equivalent of "This looks like a real nice town, no black people".

Crazy as people will call me, but Michigan, we have high rates of cancer, and TONS of medical positions. Honestly healthcare is one of the only if the only growing job field in Michigan. Housing prices and cost of living is dirt cheap(for the most part). The state itself runs from very liberal, especially SE Michigan, Ann Arbor area to very conservative west michigan. Lots of gun owning, lots of recreation, especially if you like boating in summer, skiing etc. Weather is generally good although West Michigan has very snowy winters because of lake effect snow.

But honestly, find someplace that fits you.

There are jobs to be found in the Midwest and Montana. At least that's where most of my offers were...

Here's what the pacific Northwest (Seattle) is like:

Summers are the nicest in the US - it's 78 degrees, sunny, and no humidity every day for 2-3 months. The other 9 months it's gray and gloomy 80% of the time.
If you're into the outdoors, it's easily one of the best places in the country, if not the best. The mountains here are much more rugged, lush, and beautiful than what you'll find in Colorado. Skiing is great (lots of options). Plus you're right next to water and only a few hours from the most beautiful and undeveloped coastline in the US outside of Alaska.

I have a friend that works at a big cancer research center downtown.

Im in Kansas City right now and im looking to move as well in the next 2 years. KC is boring so dont move hear. Well unless you want to raise children then its a good place. SOme of the best schools in the country and reasonably affordable. Im thinking of Denver or Portland for our move. Denver would be cheaper, but Portland has the ocean advantage near it.

For me, nothing east of the Rockies would suffice.

I prefer the laid-back attitudes out west over the "hurry, hurry" ways that you find back east, especially in the cities...(north east, not south east)

It sounds like your profession should give you lots of options.

I prefer the cold and snowy weather of the northeast, but the red state culture of the southeast. Help.

New Hampshire.
No income tax, sales tax, city or county taxes. Only dividend and property taxes.

+1 for New Hampshire. You'll even get a nice warm summer tossed in there.

Texas. Currently has one of the strongest economies in the US and has lower unemployment than the national average/majority of states.

Dallas is the only metro area in the US to have increased commerical occupany over the last quarter.

Id say Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, or a some of the smaller mid size cities.

Edit: you are in the medical/ongology field so the economy doesnt matter. So go where ever you like climate/area wise.

Go TO Tex-Ass?

WTF? Why?

I'd think the OP would prefer to stay in the United States...and since Tex-Ass's governor is advocating cecession...that'd put the OP in a foreign country...something not listed in his original request...

Since you seem to want to avoid winter, I will not recommend Madison, Wi. Though we do have a stable economy right now. Plus large medical facilities where you may have luck finding a job in your field. The city itself is quite liberal, good mix of outdoor activities(lakes, trails, lots of parks), decent cultural activities.

Sounds like Idaho or Eastern Washington is a good fit for you. I live in Central Washington and it's a pretty red-state culture even though we're not a red state

edit: opposite of southeast sounds good.

Yeah, I really just put that on the poll for the sake of it. I consider the area I live to be the most tolerable in the SE as it is.

yeah, but RTP>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Charlotte. close, but no cigar

other than that, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else in that part of the country. Eh, maybe Atlanta, where it not for the traffic.

I voted Northwest. Hard to go wrong climate + culture-wise. Just so you know, though: there are NO jobs in CA.

stay away from the midwest. It sucks.

I have lived in the Midwest and the Southwest, and much prefer the southwest.

In the midwest, I lived in Columbus, Ohio, which is a nice city and still has lots of work last I asked my mom, but the winters there are too depression inducing. I now live near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the jobs are very scarce except in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. The weather here is many times better than columbus, but there is still a short growing season.

What kind of work are you looking for?

I'll be working in radiation oncology. I am planning on picking where I go by going where the jobs take me. I can also do travel work (13 weeks one place, 13 in another, etc).

I prefer a less humid/hot climate. I've been to Montana and found I can tolerate the high 90s with low humidity, but I'd probably still loathe the 100s in AZ. I can deal with some winter weather but not too much. I liked some parts of Colorado when I was there this past summer.

I am more liberal than the average person I suppose, but I am by no means a hippy of any sort. After all I grew up in the SE. I like going to concerts, hiking, and I enjoy owning guns (but this isn't a deal breaker).

after living in Berkeley for 8 months, I can say that this area really tests one's identity as a liberal. I'll stick it out, for sure, but there are some certifiable nuts out here.

still vastly more comfortable than the conservative version of crazy, though: at least the people here are literate.

probably perfect for your desired weather, outdoor activities, music, etc. I'm from Raleigh, lived in Chicago, spent a good bit of time in Colorado, so I can honestly say that it sounds like the environment you are looking for.

medical jobs are tough to come by, however. A lot of pals are finishing up their residencies (Palo Alto), and have found that in the last year, nothing is available. People aren't retiring anymore due to having lost a good 70% of their nest egg. It seems that many new practitioners are searching out of state or at least quite far from the Bay Area. these jobs are available all across the country, of course....just not out here.
