which Sata hdd to get?

hello guys,
i want to have a minimum of 500 gb of storage,
my target is 250 gb- 300 gb hdd's 7200RPM

which one do u advice? so far i am between the hitachi t7k250(8 mb buffer) and the maxtor diamond max 10 300gb(16 mb buffer) and the maxtor maxline III 300gb 16 mb buffer)


what do u think guys?

I'd go with something other than maxtor if you value your data. Seagates are probably the best to go for now, they are fairly quiet, and have the best waranty.

as in the reviews, the seagate is shit, it is the latest in all benchmarks...
the choice is again between the hitachi t7k250(8 mb buffer) and the maxtor diamond max 10 300gb(16 mb buffer) and the maxtor maxline III 300gb 16 mb buffer)

Seagate isn't shit... You definately want a 16MB buffer; 8MB is out of the question.

If you want a 16mb cache and don't want to go Maxtor, you might want to take a look at the new WD SATA II 16mb cache drives.

Funny, i got more Maxtors online running flawless than you have been registered on AT. Ive had 2 failures with maxtors, both being my fault.. Once grounding out a MB in a case and second was overclocking so high, took the hard drive with it, which also included raising the +12V wayyy beyond spec.

A maxter has just never died on me and ive been using them for years. Worst drivers ever = IBM Deathstars.

Seagate is great, especially those who have experienced with them. But if you prefer the Maxtor 16MB cache, please go for it! There is nothing wrong with Maxtor! I bet you it's also a great HDD maker, especially those who have experienced with them. I've tried both but I still have Maxtor's on all my systems. Not to mention the competitive price. The secret is to keep them cool. A $10.00 HDD cooler, although most will disagree, is well worth for any hdd.

here we go again.

ill just say that, for me:
- 2 maxtors (one old, one new) out of 3 have died.
- 0 out of 6 seagates have died (1 barracuda, 3 7200.7's and 2 7200.8's).
- 1 wdc out of 4 have died on me (a 120GB BB, my JB's are all working flawlessly... though my 74gb raptor is acting 'funny').

Everyone has had drives from every manufacturer die, but from reading this and other forums, I'd say maxtor is a name to stay away from if you want reliability. If you want to buy the maxtors, then go for it. But take extra good care of them (cooling, see below).

When it comes down to benchmarks, who cares? any ide/sata drive is going to be sh!t slow (..except the raptor). if you need performance, go scsi. if you need cheap storage, pick some ide or sata drive that will last, and as Jiggz said, keep them cool. Active cooling or some passive hd coolers are key.

A Maxtor HD has the same chance of failing just like every other HDs out on the market. Just because you read about it doesn't make it a fact. I've had no trouble w/ my Diamond Plus9 for the past 2 years, and neither have my IBMs, Hitachis, Seagates, WDs and Quantums.

This is just stupi.d You rpersonal experiences have no bearing on the thousands of drives being produced and sold all over the world. Maxtor is a big name in Hard drives, and used in many OEM systems. You dont get that kind of name for having drives constantly fail on you.

anyway, i have to say this, maxtor problems is that they get hot always,
previously i had DM9, and i bought an hdd cooler with it, but the performance was super super great, after 1 year, the hdd had bad sectors, suddenly, so i had to replace it, they gave me WD2500SE and i cant say YUKKK, WD is really nothing comparing the speed with Maxtor

but they come at the end of all benchmarks, maxtor and hitachi beat WD and seagate all the way

If you are concerned with speed, pick up 3x 74 gb Raptor drives.

i am looking for the bes deal, the new hitachi and the maxtor are being compared to the rapto, and they beat them in some places
