go ahead and get the maxtor, when it craps out and you lose all your data, don't say we didn't warn you..

A Maxtor HD has the same chance of failing just like every other HDs out on the market. Just because you read about it doesn't make it a fact. I've had no trouble w/ my Diamond Plus9 for the past 2 years, and neither have my IBMs, Hitachis, Seagates, WDs and Quantums.

True, I've just had particularly bad luck with maxtor. Every maxtor or quantom drive I ever had died on me, and not one other drive ever has. I"ve got 13 year old western digitals still going, but not a single maxtor or quantom has lasted more than 2 years.

Go to silent PC review, they compared a seagate 7200.7 to a samsung spinpoint the spin point was faster and quieter

i been reading different forum sites and have seen alot of maxtor hard drive problems lately. ive heard the older ones are great but the newer ones seem to have problems. ive never used a maxtor myself. so far ive only tried wd and im about to try hitachi. im not saying maxtors are crap im just stating what ive seen concerning maxtors lately in this forum and others as well.

I've had more Maxtors die on me than any other HD. I have a dedicated RAID5 server with 5 Maxtor HD's (4 have died) and 11 HD's scattered in various computers in the house of various makes. A new Diamondmax 10 which I borrowed from a friend has been problematic. YMMV. I recommend Seagates.

However, the new 'Cudas should be faster, and there are no Spinpoints in his storage target. So, Seagate.

/me hugs his 160GB Spinpoint w/ Nidec FDB stamp motor

I would stay away from Maxtor and Hitachi.

WD and Seagate make the best drives.

I prefer WD.

but they come at the end of all benchmarks, maxtor and hitachi beat WD and seagate all the way

Yo, you were asking everyones opinion on what drive you should get....these are opinions, if you are so sure about the hitachi or maxtor then just buy it. Why would you post to ask for advice if you are already set on which drive you are gonna buy??? I think you need to understand that the performance gain you are looking at with the benchmarks won't even be noticeable to you, and at least if you go with a WD or Seagate your data won't be lost.

I recommend the Seagate 7200.7 or 7200.8.

I had bad luck with 160 up class Maxtors. WD has horrible ratings at storagereview, screws up a firmware every now and then and I think the sole existance of their "RAID edition" proves they are shady.

IBM/hitachi still excluded for old messes. Don't know whether they recovered.

I have no data on newer Fujutsu or Samsung.

i have three choices:
t7k250 - new WD 2500KS and WD 3200 JD
what do u think?

i omitted maxtor because of his short life, and the seagate because of his low speed and performance.
