The 570's are OK if you've never heard anything better, but their eardrum lacerating highs are too much for me. The 580's and 600's are vastly superior.

I have the 497's. I love them, they have great audio quality.

I'm a bass fan, and these have a good amount of bass too.

Main difference between open and closed is whether they completely cover your ear; open will rest on top of your ear while closed will be similiar construction to a set of hearing protectors (rigid units that cover your entire ear).

Each person has their own preference but a big plus in favor of the closed is that they exclude more outside noise, making it easier to listen to music/gaming/etc.. A factor to consider is the major type of usage for the headphones and what type of power they will be receiving. Look at the impedance level of the headphones; most portable units have trouble "driving" anything over 300 impedance resulting in poor sound or the need of a headphone amp.

Try HeadRoom for some good info and advice.

That's not true. You're thinking of supra-aural vs. circum-aural. Open headphones can surround your whole ear, like the Senn 570, 580, 590, and 600. Their backs are open, which gives usually a more detailed sound(with quality phones).

dude, how about trading for some Sennheiser HDR65 WIRELESS phones?!?!

They sell those over here too... Any good?

I've got those. They're great. I get perfect reception when sitting near my transmitter (within 15 feet), and then the signal builds up a bit of static until it sounds like a telephone and crumpling paper from downstairs and 40 feet horizontal distance.

How much did they set ya back? Im leaning towards the 497's, but might consider wireless ones if the price is decent... They also sold the 30, 40, 45, 60, & 65 wireless ones....

I too am looking for some good headphones for my computer setup. Currently using some sub $20 pair of studio style Labtec LT-835s (I'm really suprised they have a model number on them). Just want to be able to hook them up to my Dell HK-495 headphone jack without amping. Now, I'd be all for the HD497s except for the dual cord design. I have found that I really prefer the single cord with side mount.

Should I be thinking HD570s?

[EDIT] Corrected HK497 to be HD497

Dual cord as in one wire from each ear/can. A lot of them now have a single cord from one can (so the wire goes to the other ear through the top strap). When I wear those with two wires/each ear has a wire I feel closed in.

i think he means when each ear cup has a cord coming out of it and then merging to one. Like a "Y". The Sennheiser 495 Silver (great headphones) I have only has the cord on one ear cup. More convenient, IMO.

Ooooo, i know what ya mean now. Thanks.

Hmm, thats kinda crappy, i think i would rather have a single cord as well. I wonder how much i can find the 570's for on this side of the pond.

Sigh... more models to pick from if you consider Sony. Sony MDR-V6 or Sony MDR-7506. My goal is sub $100.

You'll only get the 7506 in speciality stores in Europe, and then rarely less than ?180. The V6 is not available.

The Beyerdynamic DT231 is an excellent buy in Europe. Looks dull as ditchwater compared to the HD497, but it is single-corded, built solidly, comfortable, and an outstanding phone for the money. It's less value-packed in the US due to currency differences but it's still a great deal. No isolation to speak of, though - but then, you don't get that with the 497 either.

The V6 and 7506 are almost identical in sound production. They use the same cans I heard.

V6's are excellent and can be found for $70 or less.

I paid $299 cdn for mine, and they're the ones with the built in DSP chip on the transmitter. If I were to do it again though, I'd get the exact same ones, but I'd save $100 and not get the DSP. It pretty much sucks and really isn't worth the extra money. All it does is fill in the sound more, but I find it just muddies it up and makes it sound as though the phones are forcing sound into your head.

After spending lots of time looking at headwize.powerpill.org forums and reading what people say, I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD-280 Pros for $77 US using the deal outlined here. http://headwize.powerpill.org/ubb/showpage5.php?fnum=1&tid=5138&fdays=20&stime=0&srch=280; Seems they were highly recommended for unamped systems (portables and computer-like) with a coiled cord to one side (only reason I bought these over the 497s). They're also closed so I won't have to hear all the idiots and others around me.

Edit(look below): Seems some don't like the 280s. I dunno how they'll sound for me, but I wanted to have Sennheisers this time around, needed to be a fair deal in the US, and I wanted a single cord design. Lots of people rate them = Sony MDR-V6/7506. Like most headphones, you're supposed to "break them in" for 20-40 hours before really being critical of their sound.
