Yeah have been browsing only, right now!

46C at idle -- your card turns its fans off completely then by the sound of it. I haven't done much research on your specific card. I know a lot of newer cards from 970/980/390/Fury series can turn off the fans up to 60-65C. That explains your high idle temps.

30C is a very high ambient. It's 20-21C for me in the summer and 18-19C in the winter. Think about that because it means when my GPU is at 75C, in your living space in the summer, it would be at 84-85C.

That means if you took your case to my house, your GPU would be maxing out at 79C instead of 89C.

But, I'd rather take your warm climate over cooler GPU temps, ha!

Yeah this card has that feature of turning the fans off completely i.e. 0db below 65 C. But I am using a custom fan curve with 50% minimum fan speed at all times.

It's the best time of summer here as temperatures are around 25-30 C with rains otherwise it soars upto 42 C outside sometimes and in winters it goes as low as 10 C.

I will shift my PC to AC room and try to bring the temperature to about a maximum of 80 C.

Even guru3d tests shows about 34 C as idle temp, so while browsing I guess 40C is fine with for me being enclosed within a case in a non ac room.

Hey sorry evryone for reviving my old thread again, but i am in need for some help.

I am getting low FPS on most games with this card, please help me out.

GTA V (Very High - Ultra - MSAA 2X)
MAX FPS: 65
MIN FPS: 27
AVG FPS: 49
CPU Usage: 70-100 %
GPU Usage: ~90%

Skyrim (Ultra - No Mods - Pure Vanila - High Res Texture Pack from Bethesda)
MAX FPS: 59.9
MIN FPS: 42
AVG FPS: 51
CPU Usage: 25-30 %
GPU Usage: ~80%

Metro LL (Ultra - PhysX off)
MAX FPS: 58
MIN FPS: 32
AVG FPS: 44
CPU Usage: 50-55%%
GPU Usage: ~85%

Tested only these so far.
Even my 7970HD used to give much better FPS on all these games.

At this point, I would return the card, if this is still an option. Clearly you are not satisfied with it.

What drivers are you using? Check to see if there are newer ones that will work better for those games.

Thanks so much sir for such a detailed answer. So what should be the temperature after which I should start worrying. Because playing while keeping an eye on the GPU temperatures is really frustrating after investing so many dollars.

I believe that the vendors should provide at least 10 - 15 C of gap between operating temperatures and throttling temperatures.

Also is it a bad idea to run the fans at 80% while gaming for about 2-3 hours a day?

EDIT: Could it be an issue of the 600W PSU? I have read at many places that the card can consume upto even 510 W on full load and may be my PSU is giving that much power. Should I try a higher wattage PSU?
One thing I have to say about Hawaii is that is the powertune is pretty amazing to see when it is throttling.

When I got my Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X 20 months ago. I pushed +200mV and ran the card at 1200Mhz. At that time my air conditioning in the room isn't that cold and I haven't upgraded my case yet. The card reached 94-95C when I didn't run 100% fan speed.
It's so cool to see how fast the card detects the temperature change and throttle the card accordingly, dropping the clocks and temperature very fast without heavy throttling of the framerate. Seriously the impact of performance isn't that much but you can see the temperature juggles between 92-95C. That powertune throttling is pretty amazing. I would say that Hawaii's temperature protection is pretty good.

I don't have the option to return the card but I can only get rma.
I have tried both the versions of the drivers, the 15.7.1 and 15.8 BETA, I even tried installing them after removing the previous ones with DDU.
I still feel that my three year old psu corsair cx600 might be playing a bad guy here and not being able to provide full required power to the system.
I have a lot of fans and GPU fans also running above 90% all the time.

If the power supply is too weak, you would have crashes or even shutdowns, not lower fps in games.

Software/drivers problem (as a last resort, you could try a clean Windows install at this point, maybe on a spare drive if you have one) or defective card (it could be something easy to fix, such as improperly applied thermal paste or it could be something worse).

If you really worried about min fps and temp than get Nvidia GPU which is better in these terms.

If you have multiple drives, don't forget to disconnect the additional ones during Windows install. The Windows installer is retarded and (without asking) can put system files on other drives besides the one it is installed on.

Yes I will just connect the SSD and nothing else.

Was already interested in 980 but everyone suggested 390x being $150 cheaper and good for a stop gap card for next gen ones.
Not everyone. I suggested one of the $100 cheaper GTX 970 cards that you listed ($100 cheaper than the R9 390X that you chose).

When I went for the deal I got 390x just 45$ costlier than 970!!!
970 was for 400$ and 390X for $445.

Just to see, I downloaded FRAPS and ran it on Skyrim Ultra at 1080p. I am using an EVGA SSC 970 GTX.

Here are my results from the CSV file:
MAX FPS: 143
MIN FPS: 87
AVG FPS: 118.566

Can you benchmark Heaven at 1080p extreme and compare it with mine?

This is actually really fun lol.

Ok I just did Alien Isolation, here are my #'s:

I'm just going to copy them straight from the FRAPS CSV file, it's faster, then upload a screenshot of where I was at the time of the benchmark:

Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg
3308 16765 181 204 197.316

Ok last one

I don't know if you know anything about ARK: Survival, but it's a cool dinosaur-themed game that is not done yet, and it kills all video cards as it's currently un-optimized and uses lots of cool features\textures .

Knowing that, I still went 1080p and turned EVERYTHING up to EPIC lol.

Even with those crushing settings, still maintained 30 fps avg though. If you have that game, you can run FRAPS and compare:

Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg
684 22765 25 35 30.046

I went down by the water too, which is just brutal, but looks gorgeous:
