You have those creative gigaworks? I have been looking at those, just in curiosity. How do they sound?
700W is a lot of power...I've always been suspect of creative, tho, since their designs make their speakers look like cheap plastic cubes.

If your looking for $1000 mm speakers, I couldn't tell you where to look. Maybe you should think about a home theater system with a digital input.

Yes, I have the gigaworks, and despite their high wattage rating, I found volume and power to be where they're most lacking. They just don't have the power to make you go "wow, that was loud" when something happens in a movie. THeir sound quality is pretty great though, very clear for MM speakers. Oh, you never want any speakers that are made directly by Creative, they're just about as bad as Logitechs. THe good Creatives are actually made by Cambridge Sound Works, and should say so on the box. Cambridge also makes other high end speakers and audio equipment.

Digital input is no good for hooking computers up to HT because you lose surround sound (soundstorm users, shaddapa you face.) So I'm looking at high end active studio monitors.

I can see where Nebor's coming from I suppose, if your setup is in a large room and you're comparing the Gigaworks to a much more expensive setup with a bigger sub and sats with bigger drivers (which he is). I think you're seeing the 700watts and not taking into account how it's divided; the gigaworks sub is 210w and each sat is 70 @ 8ohms. I'll concede that good fronts should probably have a bit more power or a bit less impedence, especially when paired with this sub, but I doubt most people will find the GW volume lacking. I don't. Btw if you don't game, save yourself some $$ and get 5.1 instead of 7.1.

Thanx for the opinion Nebor. The gigaworks were somewhat tempting, but in the end I stuck with my Klipsch and just traded in my old promedia 5.1's for the new ultras (yay for best buy service warranties!).

I also find 7.1 to be overkill, even for games, as my 5.1's are as accurate as I will ever need even for very sound intensive games like cs. I actually prefer to use my speakers instead of headphones. The only difficulties I have ever run into are from the wiring and rear satellite placement.

I got into a similar thing, trying to decide on computer speakers and people told me to go with an AV receiver and 5.1 speaker system. That's what I did and it's great. Have JBL NSP-1 II 5.1 speakers.

Ok. The GMX speakers blew it's fuse twice today when trying to installing them at a customers office. From that I'm prob going to go with the Z-2200's.

I've never actually heard of MM speakers blowing a fuse...sure you're not just electrocuting yourself a lot?

Had 2200's for about 4 months. KA sound. Needs longer cords for better separation though.

anyone ever heard anything about these? or these?

Between Logitech z680 and the Promedia 5.1 Ultra, which would your reccomend (or a better similarly priced alternative?)

Also, does anyone know of a good 6.1 setup?

z680s aren't competition for the Ultras. The Ultras blow them away in sound fidelity. Also consider Creative Gigaworks in 5.1 or 7.1. If you want 6.1, the Megaworks are a great series of speakers. As far as those Edirol monitors, I found this: That's it.

one more thing, I've heard about GMX's not working correctly unless you have soundsurge or something... Is this the case with the Ultra's?

Edit: Also, I've found Gigaworks S700 for $270-280, and Promedia's for $350, do the promedia's really have that much of an edge over the gigaworks... is it worth the price? I'd be using them mostly for making music + playing games, with the occasional movie. Anything is an improvement over my terrible, Harmon Karmon speaker's I've had for too long...

megaworks 2.1? i dunno about you guys but my megaworks makes my ears hurt, full blast and i can hear it through out the entire house and even through the walls outside, and if the megaworks are on full and i tune it up one grid on the logitech keyboard its already well past my average listening level. megaworks get them for excellent bass and midrange. (logitech is good bass wise, usully overkill though for average ppl) oh yea mine are megaworks 550D

why are MM speakers so ugly these days?

Altec's new cs21 looks like a nice return to simple and clean. But I think I'll have to pass on all these and just use a 2.0 bookshelf speaker setup instead.

Tom's speaker reviews suck. Where are the subjective tests? Listening results? A graph doesn't do much to help me understand a speaker's strengths and weaknesses very well.
