If you're gonna drop $200 on an SSD, you should look at the Vertex 3 IMO, or else the Micron C300.

Vertex 3 is $300, and it isn't even available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227706, or http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-Technolog...1CKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302478578&sr=8-1. Not even close to the same price class, nor is it something I can buy today. If you have a link for it, please post it.

C300 was $200 last week, and that was a good deal, but not significantly better than SandForce drives around that price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233125. Vertex 2 120GB is $180AR at Newegg, but I won't link to it because it might be a crippled 25nm version.

The Vertex 3 was ~$225 at NCIX last week until it sold out. I have a feeling that will be the street price once they're available again.

I would recommend Intel drives as well. Even the X-25M (which is old technology by today's standards) is still quite fast and remains relatively competitive with the newer Sandforce and Crucial SSDs. Plus, the reliability of Intel drives is generally better than those from any other manufacturer.

4k Random Reads/Writes on Intel drives are both quite fast, if not up to the level of newer Sandforce drives. However, I really doubt you could notice much of a difference in real-world use between an X-25M G2 and a Vertex 3 unless you were dealing with extremely heavy (sever-like) workloads. I'm willing to take a slight hit on performance for the better reliability of Intel drives, especially when that performance difference is likely not noticeable to most people.

I just got an OCZ Vertex 2 and I'm happy with it.

It's really a personal choice in terms of which SSD to get.

If you're a cheapskate, you can get the Vertex 2 60gb or the Kingston V100 64gb for around $85.

If you want a really fast SSD, you can get a C300 64gb for around $120.

If you want the fastest SSD possible, you can get the new Vertex 3 120gb for around $240.

It all depends on your budget, how much space you need, what type of SATA ports you have, and how much importance you place on things like performance and reliability.

You should check to see if you got a 34nm Vertex 2 or one of the newer, slower, lower formatted capacity, and less reliable 25nm ones. OCZ sketchily changed NAND without informing consumers, and the end result was the much slower and less reliable 25nm-based Vertex 2 drives.

I hardly ever really transfer huge loads of files between drives... so I'm just looking for response time!

I ordered intel 320 120gb from newegg.
I was wondering which drives to get earlier on. i.e sandforce or intel.

But I value reliability and the ease of rma higher than pure speed.

That made the decision for me.

The C300 'stuttering bug' is being addressed by Crucial and will have a fix by the end of the month. I am personally running an Asus P8P67 Pro Mobo + 2600K with 2 x 128GB C300s (FW 0006) and I have experienced ZERO instances of stuttering.

I hope you're correct. I have a c300 and have stutter issues. I'm on the 006 firmware so I hope Crucial fixes this soon!!!!

It's also worth noting that with their G3 drives, Intel is using a 3rd party controller.

May just be semantics but isn't the 320 drive the real G3 intel drive since its using an intel controller. The 510 with the marvel is controller is just a hybrid!

yes x10 marvell x20 =intel

stick with intel it has no bugs that sandforce doesn't care to fix. no stuttering. business class product. might not be the fastest but reliability in storage trumps all imo.

What became of Western Digital's SSDs? I have two, zero problems. WD told me that they are still in the SSD market in response to my question that their SSDs seem scarce.

are the prices on those Intel G3 coming down any time soon? 1-2 months? ... 'cause according to the reviews the market prices should be a lot less than what they're selling for today.

It will probably take longer than that, and they will only come down to market price, and hte market price isn't really dropping any time soon. If you find a deal on something else, go for it.

I'm trying to pick up a 120-128 GB SSD during this newegg sale. Really just using it for boot time/gaming. Should I just grab the Intel 320? Are there any better alternatives? I feel like the reliability is important, but it's a bit more expensive than I was hoping.
