This.

Although, I prefer pork ribs to beef. Dry rub or with a small amount of spicy tomato based sauce (easy on the sugar).

And thats why I won't eat true Texas style ribs. I hate beef ribs. Although more and more Texas BBQ places are offering "Texas style" spare/baby back ribs, they still aren't as good as ribs from Kansas City or Memphis.

It shouldn't be smothered...and of course you're wrong, good sir.

Yep. You really shouldn't even taste the "sauce", it's barely there to accentuate the yummy pork barky goodness. We're talking maybe a quart for an entire PIG.

You must of had immitation Texas BBQ.

Texas BBQ isn't heavy.

Texas brisket > Carolina Pulled Pork IMHO.

Texas is also the best for sausage, chicken, and turkey. Ribs not so much and Pulled Pork is a sin in Texas...

Texas, Kansas City, and Memphis have the best of the best of almost every type of BBQ. That is unless you actually like pulled pork, and then its the Carolinas, but that is all the Carolina's do well. Everything else is far superior in Texas, Kansas City, and Memphis.

The best pulled pork I've ever had was in Texas and I've lived in South Carolina.

California does have a style. It's called American and KBBQ suck in California.

I stand corrected, but I hate KBBQ and don't believe it should be allowed to be grouped with real BBQ. It's a shame they can't be forced to call it something else, because it's a pure abomination to imho what BBQ is. Of course that's just my opinion, but the fact you won't find any KBBQ joints in most states outside of California, it's fairly accurate.

It may not be 'true' bbq, but it tastes the best

Texas bbq is terrible.

Why is Oklahoma or Florida not on the list?

I wouldn't say it's terrible, I'd eat it over ummm KBBQ and something like steamed veggies. But, if I had any other BBQ options besides nasty ass SC stuff that tastes like mustard I wouldn't touch it.

Have you been to Texas? Have you ate at a reputable non-chain Texas BBQ joint in Texas?

I've been to Texas yes, and I've eaten at plenty of places here, including one in SD called Coops which is owned by 2 ex Texans and it's renown for it's BBQ.

I don't think any type can clearly be the best imho. Too subjective, plus you may find yourself in more of a mood for one type one day, and another the next.

Not on the list

Alabama has the best BBQ

Now has become a multi-state chain expanding in the Atlanta Georgia area.

Dreamland BBQ

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamland_Bar-B-Que

Dreamland Bar-B-Que is a barbecue restaurant chain based in Alabama. It was founded by "Big Daddy" John Bishop in the Jerusalem Heights neighborhood of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1958, but has since franchised, opening restaurants in Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, Mobile, Northport, and opened two restaurants in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area: Roswell, and Peachtree Corners.

The menu differs from location to location. At the original location in Tuscaloosa, the menu consists of only ribs, rib sandwiches, and white bread. At the other locations, in addition to ribs, they also serve pulled pork, barbecue chicken, smoked sausage, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, house salads and banana pudding.

Dreamland is eminently known for their ribs and their barbecue sauce.[1]
Accolades

The original Dreamland is one of Tuscaloosa's main attractions.[2] The restaurants have received much attention from local and national media outlets.

In 2005, Southern Living listed Dreamland in its article on the best restaurants in the state of Alabama.[3]

In 2006, USA Today included Dreamland as one of the top 10 "barbecue joints" in the country.[4] The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in 2006 listed Dreamland at #3 of "best eateries around the SEC."[5]

Also, in May 2008, Details Magazine listed Dreamland as the best barbecue by mail order.[6]

I spent four months flying back and forth between Birmingham and Fort Worth. I gave Dreamland several tries, and it was mediocre at best. I can name at least 3 BBQ establishments within 10 miles of where I lived in Forth Worth that were far better, IMHO.

California doesn't have a style, we offer the best of all regions. Want Texas? You can go to Bludso's or Coop's. Want Tennessee? you can hit JayBee's, want just flat out awesome ribs? M&M's soul food. Want Mississipi style? You can go to Jones Brothers or Phil's. There's no other state that will have the BBQ choices like we do, I can have 9.5/10 quality BBQ in any style within an hour drive of where I live. That cannot be beat. We even have that icky KBBQ for people who are into it. I'm personally not at all, but I know most other regions don't offer KBBQ spots.

So you have a native transport from each state that settled in CA, and suddenly theirs is greater than the rest of the collective states? That makes no sense. A bunch of soulless folks in CA that have never tasted good food suddenly have the best of all regions? It's like that Taco Bell stunt back in Alaska last month - those idiots wouldn't know good Mexican food, yet they were shaking and crying and praising Jesus when Taco Bell dropped in a food truck.

I don't doubt your claim that those places are good - I bet they're pretty tasty, based on some of the Yelp reviews I just perused. But are they better than some of the places in each separate state? Hell no. I've only truly known Texas and Tennessee BBQ - there's places here that are legendary, known across the US, and bring in tourists. It's one thing to say Texas BBQ is full of win...from all Texas reviewers. It's another to say Texas BBQ is full of win...from a bunch of Californians.

Taco Bell analogy holds.

Guess you're not a fan of Daniel Tosh. (Refer to his joke about Kobe Bryant raping the CO girl)

No, I dislike that guy strongly.

actually a lot of the bbq in CA ends up being Texas BBQ. We don't have much Carolina BBQ here for example.

But I'd say CA bbq = Korean BBQ. Oh man K-Town...

Yeah, I know. I already talked some about kbbq. I was just laughing at his suggestion that Californians are somehow soulless and have never tasted good food.

I worked 1 block from the one in Peachtree Corners here in Georgia and the general consensus was the food is garbage. The BBQ flavor is pretty mild and the food is always dry and lacking flavor. Something like Fox Bros or Fat Matt's blows it away if you are talking BBQ in Atlanta.
