If he picks up a 360 Holiday bundle, he will likely get the updated version of the 360 that uses 65nm chips for the CPU. The failure rate on these is low if you read around on the message boards. Much cooler and quieter.

Have you seen what the Holiday bundle is going to come with or the pricing on it?

I need to keep my wife in the loop as she'll be the one buying it

Make a list of what games you'd want to buy today and the games that you would really, really want to play. How many are cross-platform? How many are platform-exclusive? Decide what those platform-exclusives mean to you - will it be Halo 3 or Gran Turismo 5?

I did that once and it was 360 for me. I haven't kept up to date with what's new on the PS3 but the last time I checked, I wasn't much impressed. I'm not a console guy but if I had to, I'd go for the 360.

That's good advice. An alternative that won't give you yet-to-be-released games is gamerankings - they'll show you the list of games that are out AND their ratings. Useful for weeding out games that SOUND good but are not good - and for finding great games that you otherwise might not have realized were good.

* Wireless controller
* Xbox Live headset
* High-definition AV cable
* Ethernet cable

Most likely the 360. PS3 has an interesting game or two, but you can even look above and see games that people suggest for it... aren't even out yet! They won't even be out until Q2 or Q3 2008!

I own 30 XBOX 360 games and 3 PS3 games to show a bit of a difference in the libraries (note that maybe 10 are cross-platform, but achievements are FTW).

the ps3 version of GTA4 is also having exclusive content. wich is kinda sillly actually. both are having exclusive content.

Do you have a link to any information about GTA4's PS3 exclusive content? Microsoft made a well-publicized move by fronting RockStar $50 million for the exclusive episodic content.

The PS3 version may very well have something exclusive, but I haven't read about anything on par with the Xbox 360 version. The only evidence I've seen of PS3-exclusive content was a reactionary quote from a RockStar PR guy trying to appease the pissed off PS3 owners immediately after the MS deal was announced.

360. Why? Because you can actually buy good games for it. Sorry, but I have yet to see a PS3 ONLY game that interests me.

The PS3 has superior hardware and has many good features like blu ray and the fact that you can swap in your own hard drive and turn it into a linux computer.

However, the 360 is still the console to buy because of one reason. Games. Ultimately, it's what makes or breaks a console, above all other factors. 360 has so many excellent games coming out that's no other platform can really compete. Even if you don't like Halo 3, there is Mass Effect, Forza 2, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Ace Combat 6. The list goes on and on. All that with a great online implementation make it the console to buy.

It seems that a lot of the good games that are on the Xbox360 but that the PS3 has more power, Blu Ray and will possibly have a longer life as a result of it's power.

I'm kind of torn as to which one to go with though since the price drop of the PS3 to $400 and the Premium Xbox cost the same (on average).

So which would you get?

The Wii isn't an option, I've played it and while it's fun, I don't find it to have the kind of games I'm into and prefer traditional style of playing.

BTW I'm into FPS style mostly.

The two biggest games I want to play are Bio Shock and GTA4 when it comes out.

i'm positive someone else has already noted this..

you mostly play FPS', and you want to play BioShock and GTA4..

Xbox 360 is the answer.

i disagree, i like fps and would play any game on Xbox360 over pc.

It really depends. It's undeniable that kb/m has an advantage over a controller. Once you get used to a controller however, it's not that bad. Were an fps to come out on both platforms however, I would get it on the PC rather than a console

Both systems offer good FPS games. The 360 has Halo 3 and Bioshock, while the PS3 has Resistance, Warhawk (Not an FPS, but you should enjoy it the same. You might love the game, actually), Haze (might be decent enough). Both have (or will have) CoD 4, The Orange Box, etc. So, for FPS games, you can't go wrong either way.

Honestly, I'd prefer Resistance and Warhawk over Halo 3 and Bioshock. No offense to the Live people, but I am not enjoying my Halo 3 online experience. Too laggy, too long to get into games, no dedicated servers, etc. Plus, none of my friends own 360s. The PSN has always been relatively lag free for me, plus every online game I've played (limited selection, though) has had good dedicated servers. Plus, it's free (Hey, it does what I want...I grew up playing games online on the PC! The PSN works for me ). Yeah, Live doesn't cost much, though. I just can't bring myself to play Halo 3 over Warhawk (especially with the ranking system fixed). I just have more fun with my PS3. It just feels better, more smooth to me (especially the PSN, regardless of how little it may offer compared to Live).

I also just prefer games associated with the Playstation consoles. It really comes down to personal preference. What games do you want? If you want Bioshock, you may be better with a 360. Just look at what is out and what will be coming out. Figure out which one you think you'll have more fun with. It's all personal preference.

But, since you asked, I'd say PS3. I simply enjoy it and the games more than my 360, and that's all.

I really wonder what the deal is there, because in over 300 games I've had less than a half dozen games with noticeable lag. And I almost always get into a game in under 30 seconds. A few times when I had a party of 3 it took a while to get into a game, but if you drop out of the party and search for a game solo it's very fast.

PS3, some good games coming out and you have the option to play hidef disks
and a really good upconverting player to. R&C is awesome, the gt5 prologue demo is awesome to.
Warhawk and resistance for some good mp fun. Online play always free and lag free most of the time.

I love the PS3 hardware and UI; the Xbox 360s seems pale in comparison IMO.

HOWEVER

The difference in libraries is ridiculous. Xbox 360 has a much more developed list of titles to choose from. The only good titles on PS3 are Resistance, Warhawk, R&C and Heavenly Sword, all of which most likely appeal to difference types of gamers.

If you are into HUGE and SHOOTAEN games, get an Xbox 360.

I really am beginning to think it is just me or my network. Live just acts wonky for me sometimes, and I dont think it helps playing Halo 3. And maybe I should try playing different game types, but what I've tried takes a long while to join a game. I like Resistance's or Warhawk's system better for getting into ranked games...much quicker, easier, and (on Warhawk) easier to get into a game you like.

But, really...I think there's some problems with my network and Live, and I don't think many other people get the same thing I do. However, I still don't like matchmaking...too slow for me. Most of the games I try to find take over two minutes to finally join and all that.
