I'm going on a overseas trip in two days, and I'm gonna have my laptop (iBook G4 12") with me. I'd like to watch a movie or two on the plane, but I'm wondering which will help the battery last longer, a DiVx movie saved on the hard drive, or a DVD played from the disk.

I'm thinking DiVx since theres no CD reading, but does the DiVx format require some kind of CPU processing that would suck up battery life? DVD Images are out of the question, since I only have 3.5GB left of space.

Thanks

divx
takes a ton more energy to spin a disc than power a prosessor

and are you not staying in a hotel or something? just take the charger and get a univeral international adapter
also, if for whatever reason you are not staying in a powered location, i saw a laptop bag once that had solar pannels to power an outlet for charging phones and laptops

This is for watching on the plane, so therefore I need all the battery I can get . Looks like I'll go with DivX, thanks!

rip the dvd image to the disc and play with windvd or some such program. mpeg2 uses less processor power
with windvd u just "open folder" and select the video ts folder to open

You'll have a significantly larger file size with mpeg2, which means more hard disk usage. This can counteract potential decreases in CPU usage by using mpeg2 over divx. This means that there wouldn't be any advantage to using mpeg2 over divx. Divx would probably be a better idea since you save disk space.

actually i have samsung sens x10plus laptop

i played both divx and dvd for 10 min and checked the battery guage.(fully charged battery)

divx = 2hrs 49min left
dvd = 2hrs 21min left

i guess divx use less power.(for me)

i use gom player which is optimized to use less cpu power and perferm high quality.

maybe it depend on your codec and player.

disc space is cheap these days. ripping a dvd takes 15 minutes with no intervention. making a divx is a pain. the dvd has full menu's and special features, full picture quality/sound etc etc. divx is a waste of time... unless you are a pirate i guess. and yes, one can see the difference, esp on todays sharp high resolution widescreen laptops.

dhkkim mind trying again playing from hd?

Not to sound rude, but did any of you read the OP? My hard drive is a 30GB laptop hard drive, and I have 3.5GB of space left. I am not going to delete my crucial files in order to make room for a DVD image. Time isn't a concern, since I have a fast PC to do the conversion on. Resolution on the laptop isn't a big concern either, since its 1024x768. If it was higher, then I could understand the concerns, but at that res., a DivX movie should look fine.

I was starting to wonder if 0roo0roo
could understand english or just wasn't reading the original Post.
He clearly stated he only has 3.5GB free space therefore ripping the DVD to the Drive is out of the question.

Go with the divx rip. You can get output and sound quality close to the DVD quality.

sorry, posts dissapear from the mind quickly when using many tabs. its too bad he only has that space left. anywaysits still better to carry the dvd than zero effort required+more features/quality, battery life difference not enough to care.

dvd = 640x480.5ch ac3
divx = 640x480 2ch ac3 (tv captured by myself)

dvd=720x480... not to mention divx artifacts..esp at lower bitrates. and yes even at 1024x768 one can tell, unless your laptop has an esp sh*t graphics chip.

hmmmm, its interesting you say that 0roo0roo. I have dual layer DVD's which i have coverted to divx, and i cannot see any difference in quality. On my monitor, and on my widescreen projector a 1.4gb divx movie looks just as good as the original DVD9 copy. Thats my experience with divx anyway.

SLCentral, i would go with the DIVX route. Decoding the compressed avi may require some processing power, but your processor will be more efficent that your dvd drive, because it is a non-mechanical part. I am also guessing that you are not that interesting in looking at a pretty menu, or some special feature during the flight You can do menus with DIVX6 if you like, but whats the point? The menu's are fairly pointless if you ask me, especially if you just want to watch the film.

btw: I use DVD Decryptor + Dr Divx to decode\encode my dvds. YOu can also use AutoGKnot, which is free.

Gl, enjoy your flight, and goodbye :thumbsup:
