Discuss! I'm sure I've missed like 3 dozen other editors, but that'll do for now..

Give reasons if possible, and for multiple platforms if you wish.

textpad cuz it's simple and free. I'm quite sure many of the other options are better but I just need something to see text that's not notepad I have other editors for complicated tasks like xml and programming.

In *nix I use kate, gedit or vim, depending on where I'm working.

windows:
if it's one file or quick changes, i usually use vim
if it's multiple files or programming, i use crimson editor

i'd stick with vim forever if they have tabbed windows like crimson editor...

*nix:
vi is the way to go -D

some people in places i've worked at (including current) prefer dreamweaver for their PHP coding. it's .. just.... undescribeable... and stupid

I just assumed it was free because I downloaded it from textpad.com for free and it never expires. I suppose I should either pay them or find something else. Although, you'd think that if they really cared about getting people to pay for it they'd make it a little harder to use for free.

Those of you who uses don't use *nix a lot? Notepad would be nice for those small jobs if they can properly render linefeeds or carriage returns

Quick editing on windows, Notepad or Wordpad. Any coding, and I use a specifc IDE (Netbeans, Dev-C++, etc).

On *nix, Emacs almost exclusively, mostly because I never bothered to learn any alternative.

Same here! I can't be bothered to learn Vi or Pico or whatever since Emacs was the first *nix text editor I was exposed to..

I currently use Dev-C++ for C/C++, Topstyle Pro for HTML and CSS, Crimson Editor for PHP (gonna try out PHP Designer) and good old notepad for plain windows txt files

NEdit in *nix (use emacs if not available)
Textpad in Windows

Both have syntax highlighting (expandable by download), tabbed windows, and .... I haven't really played around with many others on the Windows side, but TextPad does what I need it to (UltraEdit looks pretty nice too).

I was just going to post something about which Editors are free because Textpad's pop up when you open it and also the pop up about buying it is getting annoying.

so which ones are free and good?

UltraEdit has done everything I needed it to. I've pretty much used it every weekday for the past 6 years. It loads fast and is very flexible.

vi, vim (depending on what I'm doing and what's on the system) on *nix
notepad or vim on Windows

I refuse to use pico, it isn't free.
