HI all,

So i am planning on buying a new monitor soon i plan to pair it with a gtx 580 or a hd 6970 and game at 2560x1600. I read that the dell u2711 has some input lag where the hp is relatively lag free. I can get the u2711 for $750 and the hp for around $1200. Which one would you choose or do you guys have any other recommendations?I would play metro, crysis, bf sc2 etc on it.

Cheers

I would go with u2711 and that's what I'm planning to do one of these days. Dell has these one-day-sales and u2711 can be had for under 900 Canadian dollars and that's what I'm wait for...

How much is the response time on the two displays.

Also remember your gonna be stuck @ 60hz so if you turn on vsync to take away tearing of images then your mouse is going to be laggy in FPS games.... Why dont you wait it out until they come out with 2560res 120hz PC monitors..... Your better off getting a TV with 120hz or 240hz and using it as your pc monitor. thx A 27 inch 1080p tv 120hz is 400 dollars at most...... thats a nice res but on a crappy refresh rate.... I dont understand why technology cant move forward with these PC displays....

I think you have been told many times that a tv with 120hz is NOT the same as the 120hz monitors.

Yeah, I had a u2711 for a few hours (sold it on ebay that very evening) and I didn't like it. The pixels are too darn small to see anything.

Between the two, I'd pick the zr30w.

For an eyefinity/vision setup : get smaller IPS panels for the 2 side displays and orient them vertically. I think there's a 20" Dell that fits perfectly with a 24" display in the middle. Doing it this way lowers the cost and prevents you from having to render pixels you can't even see because it's too far to the side.

I have a pair of U2711's at home and a pair at the office. I love them for CAD & 3dsMAX work. They are great for photoshop as well.

BUT I wouldn't even consider spending that much unless I had a special need. A 16:10 24" display is nearly the same in size and 1/2 the cost (for equal quality) -- 1/4 the cost if you are just gaming and don't need all the inputs and/or the in-plane switching...

EDIT: I just noticed that you said you wanted to game at 2560x1600; the U2711 is 2560x1440

Lots of nonsense in this thread, unfortunately.

#1: True 120hz TVs are rare and expensive Plasmas that command a $1k price premium right now and only come in 1080p.

#2: You can't do Eyefinity in Picture-Landscape-Portrait mode (PLP)

The U2711 at $750 US is considerably cheaper than retail, so it's hard to argue with it at that price. Usually, it goes for almost $1,000, at which point I think it's silly to buy a 27" over a 30" that's just $100-$200 more.

As for Eyefinity (or Surround), if you have the correct hardware (not worth it unless you have at least GTX 460 SLI level horsepower), it can be fun *provided* you play specific games and types of games most often. I'm in the process of selling off my own three 24" monitors because I tired of the niggling compatibility issues in certain games, I don't really play flight or racing simulators, and half the games I do play don't work in it at all or have some flawed presentation.

I'm a big fan of dell ultrasharp monitors and am using a 2709w. If you look hard enough you'll find flaws in all of the monitors that normal folks can afford. I'd pick the one that best suits your needs and budget and be happy.
