Which to upgrade next?

My question is should I first upgrade from my 2.4@2.7 'b' to a 3.06 (it will have hyperthreading which my 2.4 doesn't) or should I upgrade my 9700pro to a x800 platinum? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Gaming I'd say. I don't know, I think I just have this unexplainable desire to have hyperthreading, as I know I should probably save up for the x800. Sigh. I guess it's human nature to try and fit in. But I'm just wondering if will I see a noticable increase in speed if I go from 2.4@2.7 to say... 3.06@3.4 w/HT?

edit: The thing is though, I'm DEFINATELY eventually going to get a x800... and if I spend my money on a 3.06... hopefully the x800's will be more readily available and maybe cheaper by the time I can afford one again. And 3.06 is the highest my mobo will handle so I would presumably be set for a while in regards to CPU speed if I did that. Ahhh I don't know.

The x800 will come down in price in the next few mths..buy it then!!

If you are a gamer, hyper-threading isn't AS useful as it would if you were say a photo editor. A 600+ mhz boost (presuming you could hit 3.4 with the 3.06 which you should be able to I think) would help in some situations but not nearly as much as a better video card because a 2.7 P4 is already pretty fast.

I think its also important to note that there is probably a price sweet spot for the 3.06 right now. You might be able to find one for under $200 used or so ..... simply becuase they are no longer cutting edge, but there are enough around that they aren't impossible to find. The x800, on the other hand, is brand new, so it will command a price premuim. If it was me, I would go for the 3.06 p4.

I have been debating whether to do the same thing.... I currently have a 2.4 @ 2.54. The 3.06 is certainly affordable now, but as Nick1984 stated:

The thing is that I do some video and photo editing so that might help me out a bit. I don't thinlk it would make that big of a difference in gaming. What I'm ultimately contemplating is upgrading the whole system in the fall to a amd 64 system with 1 gig of ram when the prices drop on that stuff.

If you can afford a x800, sounds like you could afford a new cpu as well Get both so you wont loose sleep at night.
