Which TV to buy?

I know that purchasing a new TV can be quite an experience seeing that there are so many choices out there but if possible can someone point me in the right direction?

I want to purchase a TV preferably between 32 to 24 inches. I am not sure about the other specs but I do want good quality. I would imagine 1080p HD.

I use Time Warner Cable Box right now Motorola Interactive Digital Communications Model DCT 2524/1632/AL with a Toshiba Analog TV/DVD/VCR Combo which I wil be getting rid of once I get my new tv.

In the future I want to be able to record my programs because I am hardly home to catch anything on time.

My price range is between $150 to $175

Thanks if I can get any help folks.

How far do you plan on sitting from the TV?
Unless you plan on using the TV as a computer monitor, I would recommend going with a larger 720p TV over a smaller 1080p.

In your budget there isn't much of a selection. You're going to see a lot of generic branded TVs i.e. Insignia/Westinghouse/Element/etc.

24" Vizio 1080p $168
http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E241-A1-.../dp/B009IBXEE6
This Vizio is the only name brand TV I've seen after a quick search that's 1080p in your price range.

There are several off brand 28"/29" and 32" 720p TVs in your price range.
There's a lot nicer selection in the $200-$400 range

I would go for a 720p TV at that size, because you won't really be able to distinguish it from 1080p.

I was looking at the Vizio at Walmart in that price range especially since it's only blocks from my house. But now that I understand a little better, I will keep the 720p in mind. I am sure I can make a decision based on your suggestions.

Thanks so much folks!

I will only be about 2 to 3 feet from the set but I might want to use it as a pc monitor every now and again.

Thanks again

Huh?! Charter Cable pushes 1080i through most of my HD channels.

Try a 720p Dynex from BB. I got a 32'' for $155 about a month ago. The same model is regularly on sale for $170 IIRC. The quality is Ok for the price.

Not sure what this means but I won't want any of my channels dropped. Excuse my ignorance.

Generally:
Except for PPV, they output 1080i. Some people say that 720P looks better than 1080i for things like sports or where there is fast movement. I agree.
IIRC, I believe Dish compresses the 1080i to get more stations in.

You aren't ignorant. That bolded text is flat-out wrong.

If you currently have HD cable your set top box should display the the output for the channel that you're watching, ie. 480P, 480i, 720p, 1080i.

Any HD TV will play them all (no channels will be dropped) but the quality of the image will depend on the TV's internal video processor.

I can't tell if you're serious with this post.

Sheesh. In my original post, I didn't distinguish that HD broadcasts at 1080i because TVs are rarely advertised anymore as being "1080i TVs". Of course I know that any 1080p TV is compatible with the 1080i resolution, I was merely pointing out that a 720p TV at 32" or less is good enough.

Your OP was fine & relevant except for the bolded that I already pointed out;

The OP of the thread admits he's not an expert. That garbage you vomited up just confused the poor dude even further.

I'm not up on the latest in regards with tvs buy I would say to one get the best you can afford (but budget for other expenses like color calibration, cables, power consumption, receivers....) if you prefer Samsung the best place to get it would be from ncix because they are partners with them. And thus you can get it at almost cost. And one more thing... The best time to buy a tv is usually right around when the super bowl is on...
