Nikon Coolpix 950 or 990. It's not too cheap but the quality is unbeatable. You may also want to check out some of the Kokak cameras (DC265, 280, 290). Don't get Sony I have tried a few of them ($800+) and the image quality is horrible compared to an equally priced Nikon or Kodak...

I have to agree, Sony's cameras suck...I have the Kodak DC280, and it's a great camera with professional features at an affordable price. I did a lot of research before I bought mine, and most sites recommended Kodak, Nikon, and Olympus cameras above all the others.

This Nikon Cool Pix 990 looks great but how much is it and how many pics can fit on one memory card, and and how much are additional ones?

Fan of kodak digital myself. Some of the older megapixel ones can be had pretty cheap.

I've used a kodak 240 and canon s10. THe kodak was ok, but the image quality was 'eh'. The S10 was superb, but lacks a 3x zoom and battery drain is crazy w/ the LCD on. The Viewfinder also got really dusty internally (in other words, can't clean it out).

I'm shooting for the olympus 3000 (it's the 3030 minus the 32MB buffer, which I won't need). Just waiting for that $300 coupon to show up The nikon is nice too, spec wise, but I really don't like the design of the camera. It reminds me of those 110 cameras way back.

my JVC710 does a nice job for me.It does both stills(30-60 in memory)and full motion+micro. It has optical and digital zoom. JVC has a few different models to choose from for your budget.

not to bad, but the floppy system is really dumb, so much quality lost. And incorporating yet another memory standard w/ the gum stick.. WHY??? why not spend that money on developing a smaller camera that doesn't seem so bulky?

what mode was that taken in?

Okay, I was a little harsh...

I'm a little biased because I bought the Sony DSC-F55 on a spur-of-the-moment decision, and promptly returned it the next day after I was very disappointed in it.

Here's a great digital camera site with lots of reviews: http://www.dpreview.com

I used 1024x768 "fine" to take the pic above (can fit 6 pics on a floppy using that mode). I can also switch it to 1280x960 (4 pics) and 640x480 (8 pics I think). I was actually going to buy the Kodak DC-290 for 550.00 shipped from Buy.com, but I got the FD-88 & NP-F330 battery, leather carrying case, extended NP-F550 battery, plus other accessories for $275.00 and my CLAP2....not too shabby IMHO.

Hello,
I'm getting a Nikon CoolPix 950 next week. The best price I've found is $729 + a $100 rebate.

Are there any on-line stores that have a *first time buyers coupon*? Just trying to get this camera as cheap as I can.

Thanks

Before you go for the Nikon, consider this : The Nikon is not usb compatible which means you need to get a external USB reader for the compact flash cards. That is fine since they cost less than $30. The problem is that the Nikon compact flash card door is VERY VERY flimsy. (Most reviews talk about this.) Every time you remove the card to put into the reader, you feel like the door is going to fall off. Do not even think of using a serial reader with a 2MP camera. In fact it did break in my friends camera in 6 months usage. So I returned my Nikon 950.

One digital camera that is so underrated because of less marketing is the Casio. I personally have the Casio QV2000 and it is way too good as compared to any other camera in its range. It has movie capability, great panaroma capability, a 3x optical zoom, USB AND Serial capability, TV out for NTSC/PAL, auto lens cover (I hate to keep track of a external lens cover) and can read CF2 type cards (Including the 340MB IBM microdrives !). The camera takes excellent pictures and every reviewer says good things good about this camera.

Take a look at it before you decide for any other camera. The QV3000 is supposed to be even better with a Canon lens on it. Im sure you will fall for it.

What will the camera be used for? if the pics are just going to stay on the computer you don't need super high resolutions or anything. I'm going for an Olympus C3000Z, but I plan on printing the pictures out on glossy paper.

Hi , thanks for the reply. I'm going to use the camera for the sports that I'm involved in...Motocross and snowboarding. I want a camera that will give a very nice picture, and also work well with action shots. I like the feature of the 3X optical Zoom.

How much does the Casio QV2000 cost. So you would definately recomend it over over the Coolpix?

I wouldn't recommend a digital camera for anywhere that involves water and lots of shock. They are still to fragile and way to expensive for that...

and still aren't fast enough to pick some things up well (well, unless you get that $5k one ).

And that sony, 4 pics per floppy Nice quality for web tho. My purpose of getting 2MP+ would be for reprint when i needed/wanted it.

But for the price, that's pretty nice.

I think Office Max or Office Depot is having a sale for the Kodak DC240, which I think is a great 1.3 megapixel camera for general purpose use. It is affordable, not junky, and supports USB and Serial for transfers.

well if you are going for action shots, then i wouldnt recommend the kodak dc290. i have this camera and i love it. takes beautiful pictures, and i love the uncompressed image capability, mmmm 6MB images, but it has about a 1 sec delay when you press the button and it takes the picture. so i lose some of the action shots i want.

but i have taken pictures in snow environments and it handles glare and shadows pretty good.

on another side note, dont get the wide angle lens for the dc290. it suffers from severe chromic abberation (A chromatic aberration produced by a converging lens. Rays of different wavelength focus at different points. ) The edges are severely out of focus and has red and blue hues around the edges, thus it is focusing red and blue on different planes. I'm sure if i can find a higher quality wide angle with 37mm threads with the proper focal length this would be fixed. guess i shouldnt expect to much from a 60 buck kodak lens. it takes decent pictures if you really really need a wide angle, but no where near the quality it should. oh well this rant is over.
