Which verson to go with? PS3

Gonna get me PS3 today and have the option of a new 80Gb model or some of the older models. Would like to get one that is backwards compatible but it's not essential. Are there any benefits to the newest models? Will be playing this on a beautiful Samsung 50" TV.

Yes I'm to lazy to google it. Looked on Wiki but don't understand why the dropped the backward compatibility.

The 60GB is the best for backwards compatibility afaik.

They dropped hardware BC to save money on the EE chip and went with software emulation like xbox 360. The 60GB has hardware BC, 80GB uses software.

New 80GB core runs the coolest and quietest, and it comes w/ dualshock 3. PS2 BC is overrated. Besides, if you love your PS2 games so much, you wouldn't have sold your PS2 in the first place. I don't trust used things.

I think the newest model (80GB on shelves now) has a smaller chip die. I'd go for that. There are so many new PS3 games to play I don't think you'll need backwards compatibility.

Depends on the genre. Missing out on Persona 4 is going to be a killer if you like JRPGs.

I use PS2 BC all the time. It really depends what you want, a new 80gb would probably be better for you

New 80 GB at $400 (walmart has a deal today $100 gift card w/PS3, or $150 off with Sony/Chase CC) + used PS2 slim from the forums here (under $100).

If you buy a used PS3, you may end up paying $150 for out of warranty repair, and the 20 GB / 60 GB are all out of warranty by now.

If your TV has good upscaling like my Samsung DLP then a PS2 slim with component cables will look about the same as the 60 GB PS3's upscaling.

Arguments for the 20 GB / 60 GB:
+ the PS3 uses the hard drive for memory cards so you don't need to buy any and can have 10 cards each for different games in progress.
+ convenience of 1 set of hookups to TV / receiver
- hotter and possibly louder (though my 60 GB is quiet), comes with no-rumble Sixaxis instead of rumble Dual Shock

Amazon.com has the DS3 for $41 shipped today. I picked one up so I can play 2P LBP by myself. LOL
